Strange Prejudices?

In conversation with a friend of mine recently, the subject came up of an up-coming football (or soccer to anyone west of the Atlantic Ocean :)) game. My response, in the politest of terms, was;

'No, I won't be watching it, I don't find football interesting.'

Over the next five minutes I was subjected to a veritable chorus of disbelief, taunts regarding my sexuality and, eventually, amused condescension. Not being one to let the attitudes of others bother me, I waited until the conversation moved on to another subject and joined in again. In honesty, I found it quite funny that they didn't believe me simply on the grounds that I'm a man. Second to that is the foregone conclusion that you support the same team as any given one of your friends >>

Now, right at this moment, I'm sat waiting for a message I hope is going to come, wih nothing to do, at my keyboard; I got to wondering, are there stranger foregone conclusions out there than 'you have a penis, ergo you must like football'? Surely a populace as diverse and interesting as my fellow Escapists will have experienced other interesting and amusing forms of prejudice that they'd like to share to brighten my afternoon. :)

Speaking of penis, don't forget that if you drive a nice car, you have a tiny one. Ugh.

As for football, I don't find professional football very interesting. There's only so many times where you can watch, 'Quarterback passes to Fallout Supermutant running back, running back runs ball.' before you're yawning.

*Right. I was referring to American football for this post. The one with the steroids, rape, and animal abuse.

Same as you... except that I enjoy cricket... which, when aired, is greeted with many a silence and wide eye.

The idiocy behind that is that football is technically a non-contact sport... which makes it even less 'manly'. RUGBY!!

"Pick the ball up and run with it, you bloody fool!"

i don't know if you're talking about the football where the ball is actually moved with your feet or the football with the big men in enough pads to save them in a train wreck, but either way, i find both pretty boring too (being from england its rare that im exposed to the latter but it does happen)
OT: people are often like outraged that i don't like toy story because i seem like i should. no one seems to get why i boycott wiis either and almost seem ashamed of me.

I am a male dislike soccer because the American one is based on lateral passes that i find boring and because it's one of the less tactical team sports.

False prejudices about me?

- I study math, so I don't write or read poetry

- I like boxing and MMA so I must dislike musicals

- I barely eat meat, and most of it is raw fish, so i must be a pacifist

The list actually goes on :p

All my friends are slowly turning into bronies and find it "sacrilidge" as they put it that I don't like it. And keep trying to turn me(this is why I hate bronies and every other fan/religious person that is so deeply involved they can't stand it if someone doesn't like it/believe in it)into one. Football(the UK version which I use to play and refuse to call it what it is called out here because its wrong and doesnae make sense to me)I'll watch but not too much into it and I have friends who tell me that its because I'm a woman and all this shite. Football(the American one which doesnae make sense to me to call it that)doesnae make sense to me at all and once again I get told this is why I am a woman.

Also don't forget that men with big trucks are also over compensating....(though half the time in Cali at least oh dear god is that true)

I'm no biologist, but I think that's a logical fallacy... I'm fairly sure the level of testosterone and estrogen in either a male or female body is supposed to be farily balanced, although it can be upset by use of steriods and other things. Although there is research proving (?) that excess levels of testosterone can cause hair loss and irrational behaviour, but cause better overall general health >>

Yeah I hate that one. It's just a tired cliche that people accept to try and make themselves feel better about themselves. They see that someone that owns an expensive car and think that there MUST be something about them that they are better in, so they choose penis because they are morons. Probably also because they know that there is never any chance that anyone would attempt to actually prove it. People always say "Look at that dick! Who is he trying to impress?" To that I say, why so self absorbed? Why does his nice car make you think he is trying to impress anyone? Maybe he bought the car because he likes it and happens to have enough money to go and buy it.

OT: I can't really think of any strange prejudices that I've been subject too. I guess a few times people have assumed that because I'm male I like football, but I've never had anyone find it unbelievable that I don't. I have had people say that I'm a pacifist because I don't like shooters. But I've never really had the chance to tell these people that I don't hate all shooters, only ones that try to recreate realistic warfare. It's just so dull. I have no problems with games which take some artistic license with it, like sci-fi stuff. Although I am still generally indifferent to the whole genre.

Indeed. Ben Roethlisberger proved that as long as you're a quarterback, you can pretty much get away with anything. The funny part is that Michael Vick participated in illegal dog-fighting and went to jail. Roethlisberger raped and beat girl in a restroom and was suspended for a few games. That certainly says a lot about something I don't want to really think about.

Essentially that the American Justice System values animals over women? >>

That may be so, or it may be that the judge/jury in the Roethlisberger case were sympathetic football fans, or the judge/jury in the Vick case were animal rights activists. Perhaps money was involved... We shall never know >>

I don't like football either.

But that's because I do like rugby union.

You'll find in that particular scenario the mocking boot is on the other foot.

OT: One 'prejudice' that never fails to amuse me is gaming related. I've included gaming (pen-and-paper, tabletop, PC and console) as one of my hobbies for over twenty years, and yet I still get confronted on internet forums by teenagers spouting "You aren't a gamer because you haven't played X". That never fails to make me chuckle.

I think it's same for ladies.
Some girls were talking about how much women love shopping and I said it did my head in, actually. They all gasped and looked at me wide eyed and said, "then... what do you do all day?" I said many things; drawing and gaming etc and they looked disgusted.
I also never wore make-up or feminine clothes around school and everyone believed I was a lesbian.

Where I used to live was the most diverse city in the UK apparently and where I live now is the least diverse (I can definitely tell...). A gentleman with black skin started talking to me on the bus (And later asked for my number, woo! still got it! I had to politely refuse though, having a boyfriend and all) and when I went into work and told them they looked horrified that I had actually spoke to a black man. That's what disgusts me about this place, they're so prejudice and judgmental. I'm leaving next week though, so whatever.

For some reason, it's not enough to have a penis, you have to keep declaring your penis-having-hood with manly things. You have to eat manwiches, carry manbags and/or yell "I am a man!" and punch robots. Oh, pretending to have a deep understanding of all parts of every vehicle ever made is essential as well.

You don't have to like football, you just can't admit that you don't.

I might be worng, but seem to remember that in BBC's Secrets of the Sexes (http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/humanbody/sex/articles/testosterone.shtml) they mentioned that more testosterone lead to a more aggressive and win focused behavior in competences. Remember that the experiment showed that in go-carts the level of testosterone was correlated to the amount of risky maneuvers in race.

Yes, I don't care what you watch, but don't try and convert me or act like I just killed your kitten if I don't convert.

Not a "strange" prejudice to me, but I watch pro wrestling, and people find that weird because I'm literate and can string together coherent sentences. I'm used to it. My favourite is when people tell me it's fake. They seem REALLY annoyed when I walk in in the middle of Lost or similar and do the same. I don't know why.

That Americans think higher of animals than women?

Yeah, scary.

But it's pro sports in a country with massive masculinity issues. I'm surprised ANY crime by a major player is treated with any seriousness.

The "Glasses >> Nerd" thing works the other way too.
Some people thought that I couldn't possible be good at math or programming since I don't have any glasses.

I do not enjoy any ball sports, watching or playing, people wonder if I am an alien...
I have been in a relationship with the same (wonderful) girl for over a year, people actually gasp (in gr.10, but still!)
I enjoy science... people think I am going to experiment on them.
I am an atheist, my entire class went quiet for a second at hearing that...

You're also not a philosopher...that wouldn't be a logical fallacy (which are things like "appeal to authority" and "conjunction fallacy"), it would be incorrect biology. That being said...

Men have, on average, greater testosterone than women. Within an individual person, testosterone and estrogen vary wildly depending on a number of conditions (recent physical activity, recent sexual activity, mood, menstrual cycle [women only, obviously], corporate pecking order [people get higher testosterone levels after a promotion], etc.). Steroids (and other hormones/hormone supplements) will modify levels because that's exactly what they're designed to do.
