"That's what we are trying to do. To renew Xcom but in line with what this generation of gamers want. The team behind it is asking themselves every day: 'Is it true to the values of the franchise?' It's not a case of cashing in on the name. We just need to renew it because times are changing."
And this is where it began reaking of utter bullshit. "What the gamers want" and "We're not cashing in" back to back is a huge red flag. Someone confident wouldn't feel the need to focus on this. I think 2k is intimidated by the bad responses they have been getting.
They should be intimidated, because based on the gameplay footage they've shown so far at least the latter statement of "We're not cashing in on the name" is a complete lie. They are SYSTEMATICALLY cashing in on the name. Once the backlash hits them square in the face you can bet that the X-COM name will be buried again like nothing happened.

And the industry will continue to desperately dig through its franchise junk drawer; looking for an excuse to produce yet more generic titles that completely miss the point of what made them appealing and memorable in the first place.

"RTS's arent contemporary"- SC2 begs to differ, it shewed that the old formulas still work whilst providing many little refinements to make it one of the most competitive yet accessible games of the genre.
There an interesting counterpoint to this is in RPG's- the old formulas are aging and in need of updating, with new iterations showing the flaws in the traditional aspects and how new ones are currently unidentified.

Further proof that developers don't have a clue what gamers want. I am 23 years old, not some. Strategy games have always, and likely always will be, tops followed closely by RPG.

Whenever I hear of a franchise going through a genre shift and how terrible that is, I can't help but think of Fallout. Talk about a success story.

Yeah, I totally agree. It is a shame that no one can seem to grasp why X-com was so popular. It is one of those rare gems that all they really have to do, is reboot it by making the SAME EXACT GAME with updated graphics and a more friendly user interface. But the original interface was fairly intuitive as it was so with minor changes to the game itself I think it would go over well. I would even like to see Terror from the Deep re-imagined as a sequel where more creative liberties could be had.

It is a shame that a shit "cash in remake" is going to cause this great title to go into the junk drawer for years to come because it isn't what gamers want. I am in the crowd of we don't know it will be shitty yet, but I plan to evaluate it not as a X-com franchise game but yet another game "inspired by X-com". Like UFO Aftermath. (Which I liked but X-com is better.)

If I recall, there is a spiritual successor to the real X-COM in the works right now.
Can't remember the name off the top of my head...

I think it was Xenonauts?

While the old fans didn't like it for the most part, the real big difference here is that Bethesda also bought a fairly unique setting with the Fallout IP, so it made sense.

With XCOM there's nothing to the setting. Anyone can simply copy the premise and some indies already have. Greys are not intellectual property.
What's worse is that the new game doesn't even take place in the near future like XCOM, but about 50 years ago, so it's the just the name and only that.

Oh yeah, someone posted here about that like a month or two ago. I had forgot all about that. I think you are right on the name. I will have to follow that game more closely than I have been. I have been excited for Dead state. Has ex-Troika members in on its development and looks to be in the same spirit of X-com but with full on zombie apocalypse as the theme instead of massive alien invasions. I will make sure I add Xenonauts to my games to watch list.

I'm 17 and regrettably didn't notice XCOM on the Steam sale, but I've got one foot in the door of the target audience's convention (the foot I'm trying to get out). I can hear that they aren't very excited, and neither am I.

They're butchering the goose that lays golden eggs. It's not the goose itself, but what it does. XCOM is just a name. Sticking it on tapioca pudding won't do anything.

In the words of Han Solo: "Great shot kid, that was one in a million!"

I disagree with the man quoted on both his proposition and his evidence used to back it up.

Also
Look at someone old school like Ray Charles, if he would make music today it would still be Ray[...]
That's terrible.

"If he would make music today"? Really? Come on.

BLASPHEMY.

A POX ON HIM.

Seriously, though, I can't accept this mindset that strategy games aren't contemporary. When I was a little younger, and I would go stay with my grandparents, there was never any shortage of new and awesome strategy games and game demos I could find to bring along to keep me entertained. To say that it's a dead genre is like saying The Wiggles are unsuccessful because they don't have any Top 40 singles.
