Streaming Games: the future. Have you tried any on them?

So, Google Stadia was a non-starter for me. It sounded like if I could even get it working well, I'd be shelling out $60 for games I already own.

But lately a number of things are becoming apparent.

Microsoft appears to be more interested in a gaming ecosystem with a ton of content than in hardware.

I just found out my Amazon Prime account comes with free games on a streaming service called Luna. Free is my favorite price so I tried it. I just played some Devil May Cry 5 without even having to have downloaded the game and it is terrific.

Then I just found out about something called GeForce, which has been around longer than any others at this time. It comes with a free play for an hour (a day? At a time you have to start again?) using my Steam, Ubisoft and Epic libraries anywhere. WHich seems nice but I've waited about 10 min in queue to play. There were some 270 players ahead of me. Some 10 min. later, there are 180. EDIT: Gave up after about 40 min. Later, I'm kicked out when I return. Trying again... took about 10 min and I'm in. 2nd Edit: Got in. Got an 7 year old business laptop to play a state of the art video game well enough.

Have you tried this stuff? Your thoughts?

The closest I've tried was Sony's Remote Play while I played the Witcher 3. It was tolerable for a while, but it's showed me that all this talk of streaming games being the future isn't in my future for the next decade or so.

Windows probably does still have a feature that allowed me to play on my business class laptop on my wireless network. It really wasn't good. PS3 and 4 allowed me to play on my Vita which, to these old eyes, was even worse. But I played Devil May Cry 5 using Amazon Luna and it was fine. No need to worry about storage space for it. Can be played on anything. Good to know in these times when a decent card, if I can find one, goes for about $600 entry point.
I'm opposed to the concept. I'm boycotting it.
The Extra Credits video above, I think, may be correct. It was published during PS3, 2011. He says he thinks there may be 2 more console gens and after that, consoles will seem as quaint as coin operated arcade machines.

I do think VR, portable gaming and PC gaming will always be a thing. But a PS6? I'm not sure.

While a PS6 sounds weird, guaranteed it’s already in the mid planning stage.

There’s no way a platform holder will disregard that much of its user base anytime soon. Besides game steaming still sucks for a majority of people. Hell, I have 200Mb internet and still have delays with the Firestick just running shit like Hulu, Prime, TV network apps like ABC, Peacock, etc. Disney IME is probably the worst for this, which is ridiculous with how much money they have and how often kids watch it to have it not be reliable.

I have an odd problem I blame on my ISP. I have great signal throughout my house, but watching HBO on any device in my addition will lose connectivity sporadically, even though the signal is fine.
But if 4K requires 25 mbs, I'd think a 200 mbs connection should be fine. Your pain point may be caused by something else.

I’d imagine most people with fast internet but slow streaming are experiencing similar bs.

I've been meaning to give it a shot- thanks for the heads' up about Luna, I will give it a go when I'm in a gaming dry spell.

I'm confused by the harsh negative reaction here- seems like a nice way to spread access to various games to people? Of course I'm aware of the internet speed / bandwith limitations, but that's an issue with, you know, our stupid country's (I'm guessing we're mostly U.S.?) infrastructure and lack of collective sense of well-being, not game streaming as a principle.

I think this site originated in Australia. I think there is an international community here with all sorts of varying quality Internet.

There is a lot of hostility to digital in general. If you own a disc, it really feels like you own it. I've bought digital games, only to one day have them no longer available as the provider has changed something.

So far, as I have Amazon Prime anyway for the shipping? Feels like I'm getting something pretty great for free.

I have a nice desktop with an RX 480 8 Gig card. Cards are like hen's teeth nowadays. Nice that through Luna, I can play a state of the art game on a 7 year old business laptop. So for me, this shows promise. (Also want to try my Fire Pendent on a 55" LED TV in my basement... and try it on my S20 Android phone).

Nope. I have absolutely no intersection between "I want to play a game" and "I can't get to my gaming computer" that can't be covered by some little free-to-play "escape the room" game on my phone.
