Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist Live-Action Movie to Debut Later This Month

Catch the first trailer for Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist, the live-action movie based on Capcom's iconic fighting franchise set to debut later this month on Machinima.

Capcom's iconic Street Fighter fighting franchise might finally be getting the live-action movie it deserves very soon. Set to debut this May 23 on Machinima's main YouTube channel, Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist focuses on Ken and Ryu's formative years in Japan, where the duo is studying the Ansatsuken (Assassin's Fist) martial art, and we learn more about their master Goken.

Here are the interesting bits from the press release:

STREET FIGHTER: ASSASSIN'S FIST will officially debut in its entirety on May 23 on Machinima (YouTube.com/Machinima)! A thrilling, multilayered series, STREET FIGHTER: ASSASSIN'S FIST, presented by the all-new Honda Fit, takes the audience back to the formative years of iconic characters Ryu and Ken as they live a traditional warrior's life in secluded Japan. The boys are, unknowingly, the last practitioners of the ancient fighting style known as "Ansatsuken" (Assassin's Fist). The series follows them as they learn about the mysterious past of their master, Gōken, and the tragic, dark legacy of the Ansatsuken style. Can their destiny be changed, or will history repeat itself?

Through the coming of age story of Ken & Ryu, we are shown the backstory of some of the game's most iconic characters, and over the course of the series we will see how the past, present, and future of all of those characters are intertwined, as the battle to become Ansatsuken Master threatens to tear apart another generation of brothers.

Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist is co-written by Joey Ansah (The Bourne Ultimatum), who also stars in the series as Akuma, and Christian Howard, who appears in the film as Ken Masters. The rest of the cast include: Mike Moh as Ryu, Togo Igawa (47 Ronin, Memoirs of a Geisha, The Last Samurai) as Gōtetsu, Akira Koieyama as Gōken, Gaku Space as Gōki, Mark Killeen (300: Rise of an Empire, The Dark Knight Rises) as Mr. Masters, and Hal Yamanouchi as Senzo.

The live-action series is being produced by UK-based company Assassin's Fist Limited, in association with Lonely Rock Productions, Gloucester Place Films, Capcom U.S.A., Inc. and Evropa Film.

Just from watching its first trailer, I can already tell it has a big chance of washing away whatever nonsense I was exposed to in that "official" live-action film Street Fighter film starring Van Damme as Guile. What do you make of it so far?

Looks cool, and I will watch it. Them saying the moves as they perform them? I know they do in the games, but in live action, it looks comically cheesey.

Yeah, seems like it, no? But as a whole, series looks very promising. I can't wait to watch it myself. :D

Oh dear, it's going for the serious.

I'm afraid genuine drama can't be sustained with such obvious wigs.

This is why we have the medium of animation, people.

I like all the reactions akin to "I can't take this seriously!"
Have you guys never seen a kung-fu film before? Did you spit your popcorn out during Crouching Tiger? Would you take a dude in a mirror maze with claws seriously? This stuff is inherently goofy, suspend your disbelief for an hour or two and have some fun.

I like this, the fighting looks good, seems as fun as the MK web series but more faithful to the overall mythos.

This has a lot of promise, I with the effects where better though.

Reeks of cheeky fan-fic cosplay shenanigans. The kind you abashedly click out of when someone catches you watching it.

That's all I'm hoping for to be honest. If the characters are likeable and there are some decent "awesome moments" I'll be happy.
