Street Fighter Player Loses Home, Community Helps Out

Street Fighter player Chris Hu may have lost everything in a fire, but the fighting-game community is banding together to try to help him get back up on his feet.

Chris Hu, an amateur Street Fighter commentator and member of the told ABC News [http://www.shoryuken.com/forum.php?s=70eb5c0207c84374c51d43dd09f76d7c], his family lost their entire life's savings - as the report notes, many immigrants like Hu don't use banks.

However, in a spark of silver lining to the otherwise dark cloud, the fighting-game community is banding together to take care of one of its own. Shoryuken is running a collection drive [http://www.shoryuken.com/content.php?r=587-Help-Out-a-Friend-in-Need-Chris-Hu] for Hu and his family, priming the pump by donating $1,000 out of its own coffers to get things started.

From what we can see, the pot has grown steadily since yesterday, with some SRK members donating well over a hundred dollars - such as one particular Street Fighter fan, who donated precisely $133.70 for Hu's "leet commentary."

While none of this makes the tragedy any less tragic - and certainly not for the families who don't have passionate communities who can help them recover - it always brings warmth to my cold, cold heart to see gamers banding together to help out someone in need. We gamers are a charitable bunch - just look at Child's Play.

Best of luck, Chris. Let's all hope that a community known for its love of intricate combos can pull off a super move of charity. And if you've got a few extra bucks to spare, why not send them Chris Hu's way?

Wow, right on!! That's quite awesome!!! Not something I'd expect from a gaming community, but then again gaming communities can become quite the family. I've lost almost everything I've owned in a house fire before, and yeah it's really devastating, seems almost impossible to come back on to stable legs. It's hard for us (Westerns who grew up here) to understand it, but ask your grandparents how they've viewed banks through their lives, my grandfather use to give a passionate speech about banks and the dangers of trusting them, not only did he spend his childhood (the 1930s) in abject poverty because of the folly of banks, but he lost 40 years of savings when another bank in Australia collapsed in the late 80s, but funny enough he still had to pay the creditors of said bank the home loan, which was actually less then the savings he lost, he owed.

And then there comes the problems facing people from countries where the governments have inordinate control over banks and the money in them, for those people in a new country it can take them a long time to trust banks, and many never do, the same can be said for police. In the west most police, the vast majority even, are in it to help people, in other nations it's about personal power and protecting the state.

So you need to understand where he's coming from.

But back on topic, it's always good to see a community for any form rally around one of it's own, no matter where it is.

Apparently immigrants' distrust of banks is fairly widespread [http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/18/nyregion/18cash.html]. I could imagine this is even more true for Chinese immigrants- it's likely that the banks in that country are quite closely tied to the government. Different cultures and all that.

More on-topic, it's great to see that a community of gamers can step up for one of its own. It helps to show that we're not all that unlike any other groups who come together over a common cause, whether it be sharing recipies or trading Dragon Punches.
