Sorry this isn't really a subject ripe for debate or discussion, but I would appreciate the advice.

Is Street Fighter IV playable with a controller instead of an arcade stick (those things cost way too much)? I mean to a level where I can pull off some pretty good moves and not get raped every time I go online.

Is it worth waiting for the new version of this game to come out (Super Street Fighter IV I think), and when is said game released?

Is this a good game for someone who has never played a 2D fighter, but is interested in the concept and mastering it (without arcade stick ;)?

Again, thanks for the help.

Yes, you should be able to pull of some sweet moves.

But I'd rather buy Super Street fighter 2 HD turbo remix

You can play SF4 without a fighting stick. But i would suggest playing on PS3 and not the 360 for the lone fact of the controller not really being suitable.

I do fine with a normal controller, in fact, I struggle with a joystick.
I would wait for super street fighter 4 however, more characters, more ultras and more content in general.

I'd say it isn't a very good game for beginners, due to how incredibly frustrating it is. Even in arcade mode, the last character you fight is incredibly cheap and frustrating. I heard that the new BlazBlue game is good for beginners, because it is easy to learn and hard to master, where in my opinion, Street Fighter is easy to learn, but it is riddled with button mashers and people that are amazing at it.
With that said, you can play it with a 360 controller.

It works fine without a fight-stick. You're at no distinct disadvantage by using the stock controllers, and this is a great 2D fighting game, not one of the simplest but definitely not one of the most complex (looking at you, Guilty Gear).

I play it on the PC with a 360 controller. It works fine, just use the analogue stick.

I'm still pissed off with it because the PC version is totally unplayable without a controller.

Blah.
Controllers are pretty cheap nowadays though. I got a used 360 controller and a dualshock clone and they work wonders for SFIV PC. Do you have it or are you considering it?

Dunno when it comes out, but I don't think it will be a full priced game.

Super Street Fighter 4 is being sold as a whole new game for $60.

I'm propable going to get ridiculed for this but: a keyboard is quite viable for the job as well. I've never tried the arcade stick but from what I've experienced with the controller vs. the keyboard, I prefer the latter. Sure, they'll point fingers at you but the keyboard does have its strenghts with some very easy special inputs (the Shoryuken is ridiculously easy to pull off with the kb).

If you're going to play Zangief though, get a stick. You simply can't perform his specials with the keyboard.

E: Of course, it seems PC was not the question. Nevertheless, you don't need a stick for it.

Since I have an Xbox 360 controller, so I could play it on either the console of PC, which is better? I mean, which has more people playing it and are any of the versions superior?

The PC community is mixed. There are a lot of forward jumping heavy kickers around and other abusers, but I've encountered a lot of great matches as well. I don't know about the console versions though.

E: Regarding player numbers, I usually always find a match except when it's at a time when nobody is playing video games anyway.

The new SSFIV has been delayed for a good while so it's probably worth getting SFIV. It should only be about 20 quid now anyway.

I have it on PC and found the keyboard very hard to use with certain moves so I got the TE arcade stick for christmas. It kicks ass.

I heard that some people have serious trouble pulling off moves with the PS3 and Xbox 360 controllers.

So what you should do is get this, as it isn't as expensive as the fightstick. Getting SFIV and the controller here nowadays would be about as expensive as getting a new release:

I'd reccomend trying out Street Fighter 2 first, as 4 is heavily based on it, (and trust me, thats not a bad thing!).
If you can pull of the special moves on 2, 4 will be a decent step up.
Apart from Street fighter 3, the Street fighter series is relatively simple to pick up and play, (heck, I managed to teach a total RPG obsessed maniac to play it in half an hour!).
What I love about 4 is how it goes that extra mile and gives a mode that introduces you to basic and advances combos.
I personally think the PS3 analogue stick is better than the 360's for rotational input, but the playstation controller's D-pad is an absolute nightmare to use.
(I remember I wore out a hole in my thumb after a session of Street Fighter alpha 3 on the ps1! XD)
In the UK, 4 is very cheap, (£10) so it is a good buy. From what I hear Super Street Fighter 4 is going to be cheaper than a normal retail game, so either or both are a good option.

EDIT: on one site super 4 is only 22 pounds to pre-order. (many sites approximate 30)

i got a old sega saturn controller.

cost me $18 and had it for a few months. works great. Had to buy it from Hong Kong though, took a week and a half to get here. After you figure out how to map the buttons, it is great. Better than the SF4 official ones, because of the huge d-pad.
