Hi guys, was wondering if you could recommend any animated films which aren't studio ghibli but share the great animation, story and comedy of the great studio.
Me and my friend want a great movie for tonight and we both adore Ghibli movies but have seen them all, if anyone can help us out we'd be extremely grateful (cookies grateful!)

What you request in the thread title necessitates the response - all of 'em...

But way to go with a misleading one... please amend to 'Studio Ghibli-esque Recommendations' before you have a whole load of people coming on spewing lists of Miyazaki films.

OT: Can't think of that many titles that share Ghibli's bent, to be honest, though there are plenty of good anime films (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Five Centimetres per Second etc.)

I've heard Akira is good. I don't know whether or not it's like any of Studio Ghibli's films, but apparently it's in the vein of "extraordinary films that just happen to be anime".

No probs, sorry if the original comment sounded a tad vindictive.

Anyway, Toki o Kakeru Shoujo is a sci-fi drama with decidedly dark undertones and is an illustration of morality, in a sense. As for Byousoku Go Senchimitoru, it's a rather depressing series of romantic vignettes.

Ah, found one: Kawa no Hikari, if you can find it... lots of big name seiyuus, but I thought it was OK (muted colours, a rather formulaic plot but crisply animated and well acted)

No worries, cheers for the recommendations, we are mostly looking for uplifting cheerful stuff so anything along those lines is superb XD

Valkyria Chronicles has a sort of innocent thing going on, much like Ghibli films, along with the same anti-war message Miyasaki likes to throw at us.

Come to think of it, there isn't anything I can think of. I grew up on Dominion Tank Policy and Guyver series (I'm one of the few anime fans from the 90's, when even most geeks didn't know what anime was).

I personally like Castle In The Sky and Ponyo the most. I suggest giving those 2 a look.

I'll throw in Origin: Spirits of the Past... Really quite enjoyed it. It has the same nature vs evil man vibe as Nausicaa but obviously much more modern with gorgeous animation and some great music. Perhaps a little over ambitious but it's a visual treat from Keiichi Sugiyama.

Please please check out The Sky Crawlers if you are a fan of amazingly underrated anime films. Its about a group of pilots forced to do battle against each other but for reasons unknown (to be unravelled). Exquisite stuff from Ghost in the shell writer Mamoru Oshii.

Another film that really captures my imagination is Millenium Actress. It regularly tops my favourite anime of all time list. It's an imaginative and thrilling story about a fictional japanese actor's life and all the mystery that surrounds her. Beautiful and heartfelt story telling from the late, great Satoshi Kon.

Fucking awesome film, and the opening scene is the best dogfight I've seen on film... ever!

I also find it a subtle allegory for the anime (and perhaps entertainment in general) industry...

I totally agree, I actually think its the best opening scene to any film ever. Just a perfect introduction to the rest of the film and mmm dat music! I'm amazed how overlooked this film is.

Summer wars
The girl who leapt through time
Children who chase lost voices from the deep below

If you are looking for more action, then I recommend Appleseed and sword of the stranger and ghost in the shell.

Anything made by Satoshi Kon. He was a great animator who sadly died from cancer and he wasn't even old!

Anyway his films are -
Perfect Blue (more of a scary like thriller so you have been warmed)
Millennium Actress
Tokyo Godfathers
Paranoia Agent (a 13 episodes series and also a thriller like series)
Paprika
Good Morning (a short which is part of Ani*Kuri15)

We ended up watching The Girl That Leapt through time and we LOVED it, exactly what we were looking for, aside from Five Centimetres per Second are there any more like TGTLTT?

First one that came to mind: Summer Wars... about a kid who meets his soon to be girlfriend's family and mass electronic warfare ensues... from the same studio as Toki o Kakeru Shoujo.

There's also Origins: Spirits of the Past, but I haven't seen that, m'self.

Girl that Leapt Through Time is a good one, and that's why everyone's recommending it.

Grave of the Fireflies. Sad, depressing, kids dieing, but a very powerful movie.

BlueSeed is an anime series about nature vs humanity with Japanese folklore themes. 26 eps, very fun to watch (I loved it dubbed outside of Momiji. And subbed was pretty boring without Sakura (who's dialogue is hilarious)).

If you haven't, you should marathon Mushi-shi. Very folklore as a whole, each episode is separate from the next, and it has a Very Ghibli-esque feel. A slew of stories about people having to deal with spirits (elemental and spiritual, usually small), but the spirits are part of nature - and the main character, a 'Mushi Master' has to help them all come to terms with their problems.

Hunter X Hunter is another series about a boy who aspires to become a hunter to find his father. More ghibli-esque in the sense that it's a fun kid's anime with characters you can really connect with... That and Gon's knowledge is that of nature and fishing. There are Four volumes and an OVA or two that continues off of that (OVA you can only find fan-subbed).

Ah! My Goddess is an extremely cute anime about a guy who decides to make a goddess his girlfriend. The first OVA is about 6 episodes long and has a very full-filling story. That's if you enjoy the fact that Ghibli movies tie into strong female characters.

I don't know if it counts as anime, but you should see Titan AE at least once in your life. Great movie. Space-themed... But oh so awesome.

And my mind has petered out on suggestions I can give off-hand. If you enjoyed those animes, feel free to ask for more from me.
