I detect baloney.

This waste of time doesn't deserve to be called a study.

Classic fear mongering to get the middle class to vote for platforms that remove civil liberties.

People need to learn the difference between "addicted" and "lazy". I'm willing to bet that a majority of gaming "addicts" are just lazy. I game a ton, but when my PC broke down did I become more productive? No, I just spent that time reading or watching TV...

When will people turn their attention to a much more serious, and yet so socially accepted addiction that makes it hard for addicts to escape from: Gum?

No joke, I feel I need this to operate most days.

Anyways, is it so hard to tell that there are two reasons people escape into games?
1. They are fun
2. Life is not always so

Hell, turn on the TV and be glad most countries don't have hikikomori (where the stress of society hits a point where people just choose to stop being a part of it) problem Japan has with what the News tells you the world is like.

Don't these people get that something being really fun is not by definition addictive.

JUST REALLY FUN!

If people were going this sucks they would put the controller down, they don't because it does not suck.

I havent had access to the xbox reason being that i moved house and it has in turn been moved into my brother's room and...well....i don't want to go in there...

I usually play the xbox for 30+ hours a week. I haven't played the xbox for a month. it hasn't bothered me at all. i'm getting my own xbox at christmas though =D

But seriously? COD is a shoot 'em up? I was sure that it was a FPS. In fact i KNOW it's a FPS.

Addiction: the state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming, as narcotics, to such an extent that its cessation causes severe trauma.

With a definition like that human beings can be addicted to absolutely anything. Since we know that why do we still keep doing studies to see if things are addictive or not instead of doing studies to find ways to help people which are actually addicted.

I'm confused as to whether I'm addicted... I easily game for 50+ hours a week but I can easily stay away from pretty much all technology for a few weeks or longer.

STUDY THAT ONE, BBC PEOPLE D:
Ah, the 'I can quit any time I want!' argument :p

Guess what else compels people to stay glued to it for a long time... Everything that is classified as leisure activity! if we didn't have this feeling of not wanting the fun to go away, people wouldn't have hobbies. Basing it solely on video games is an incomplete study.

Oh look, more people claiming video games are addictive. Oh look, they're talking to children. Since when did children know what was good for them?

Anyway, it's really not that hard to stop playing a video game. Just because some snot nosed kids have weak wills does not mean that the game industry is pumping out electronic narcotics. Huh those sound kind of fun actually :p

This isn't even an objective study, this is just spreading fear.

I expected better of you, BBC. I will now move on to Al-Jazeera.

What they really need to look at is whether or not the people that are "addicted" to games show signs of addictive behavior in other areas. Some people just have addictive personalities. It's like people who say a kid has ADD, but then the kid turns around and sits for 8-10 hours playing some game or another. It's not selective, you either have an addictive personality or you don't.

You can become addicted to a substance, but arguing that someone can be addicted exclusively to videogames and not have an inclination to be addicted to something else as well is BS.

In a quote from one of their experts
"but if you've got... that vulnerability or susceptibility to addiction that will keep you in the game probably far in excess of what the normal person would do."

Bottomline, money is being spent to research:
People susceptible to addiction are likely to get addicted to things.

I hate when research dollars are wasted like this.

If you think that people that get addicted to drugs are weak willed, you need to look around you. People that get addicted to drugs have to try incredibly hard to get off of it. Then, every single minute of every single day of the rest of their lives is spent trying to stay away from drugs. It takes a very strong sense of will and motivation to stay away from things you are addicted to.
sorry if I was unclear, I agree, people who become addicted need strong will to get off and stay off, but I mean trying the stuff in the first place. I give credit to addicts who get off the stuff, but they were weak willed to get hooked in the first place.

You can induce psychological dependency and compulsions with the right tricks. Video game addiction exists in the same way as TV addiction, work out addiction (Bigorexia) and even addiction to buying shit.

EDIT: Also thinking it has anything to do with a "Weak will" or being stupid is fucking stupid in and of itself.
You have no basis for that final statement. Having a weak will can certainly work to tip the scales from habit to obsession to addiction, as a person becomes increasingly dependent on the subject of the habit/obsession/addiction. A weak will is simply an unwillingness to go without the comfort of a psychological addiction, or an unwillingness to deal with the withdrawal symptoms of a physical/chemical addiction.

You cannot just "wish away" the psychological component of addiction, which comes straight down to a person's willpower. Willpower is a skill that can be taught and bolstered... or neglected and atrophied. Recognizing this isn't the same as "blaming" every addict for their addiction, or removing all compassion for the addict. It's simply recognizing that the subject of the addiction isn't always the root cause for the addiction.

Using techniques of conditioning, you can induce new habits and automated responses, and some of these can become addictions. You can't, however, make someone addicted. You can provide the environment and reinforcers, sure, but that's about it. You might cite any number of experiments done with animals to demonstrate the kind of control conditioning can have, but you forget that we, as people, have access to something those animals do not--the ability to recognize and resist manipulation, if we are willing.

I game instead of learning a lot.
Why?
Cause, for whatever vaguely discernible angsty teenager reason, I simply cannot give a fuck about my marks. I'm still mostly 3-4 (the Hungarian grade system goes 1-5, 1 being the worst etc) with a bunch of 5s. But I don't learn shit. I'm just good at using the stuff I catch on lessons. If my mom didn't keep telling me to start learning already and get good marks (we have a lot of arguments), I'd probably just drop outta school.
Thank god she's around to tell me that.

If I was more social, I'd go and hang out with friends and go to parties and such. But I am very shy, and shittily adjusted to social interaction. Not that I don't keep trying, or that I am particularly disliked (I'm mostly accepted, far as I can tell): I just feel incredibly unconfortable around people. Which sucks monkey balls, let me tell you.

I have no idea why did I just post all that shit. (or maybe I do?)
