I love Neon Genesis Evangelion!

Would I recommend it to anyone? Not in a million fucking years.
Original Evangelion or the Rebuild?
Original.

I might recommend the Rebuild movies, since it has less of what I like and therefor less of what most people hate.

Honestly...? Almost every single tabletop game I own and play, except 2-player Kosmos games or something like Settlers or Stone Age or maybe Dominion.

Trading card games...

Pretty much most of the music I listen to isn't exactly easy listening or default stuff, so I can relate to the OP. I probably would have given them a mix of Dream Theater songs, but it would have been tough to compile a mix that would appeal to the average listener, but a few of their tracks are definitely the most "accessible" Prog Metal I've heard, as opposed to say, Symphony X or something, but I digress. I've tried getting a few friends into Instrumental Rock, and some of them think it's awesome, others say "so it's like a 5 minute guitar solo wankfest? no thanks."

I would list most of the games I loved from the mid-90s here, like X-Com or Jagged Alliance - I can see why plenty of people wouldn't like turn-based strategy, or even understand why I like it.

PC gaming in general has a stigma to it, but I've gotten friends into some sweet indie games by getting them humble bundles for Christmas and such. It's tough to really "recommend" someone to get into enthusiast-level PC gaming though, especially if they already have a 360 or PS3, but some of them come over and I'm playing something really different and out there compared to what they're used to, and they get interested. It's like the first time you see the Tactical Zoom in Supreme Commander, if you only remember RTS games like Starcraft 1 or Warcraft 2, or seeing someone flying around at 200 km/h in Tribes when you're used to slower-paced modern military shooters (Note I am not using the word "Realistic").

Obviously roguelikes are something that isn't easy to recommend to everyone, but some people appreciate the depth and complexity.

So those are a few things I can't really "recommend" to everyone, just like my love for CRPGs, JRPGs, arena FPS games, tactical FPS games, etc, don't appeal to everyone (people say Quake Live is "mindless" when it actually probably has the most depth of any e-sport on the market at the moment).

Oh boy do I agree with this. Very much a mileage may vary issue, but I would not recommend it to anybody unless they are genuinely interested. I can very easily see why it might come off as convoluted or pretentious. But it's still my second-favourite anime of all time - right behind FLCL, another Gainax effort. Which I also wouldn't recommend to anyone on account of the millions of anime in-jokes, shout-outs and parodies.

J'adore Aplha Protocol, mais (forgets French) I LOVE IT, YOU PEOPLE SEEM NOT TO, SO I'M NOT GOING GUSH ABOUT IT!
I got your back bro.
OT: Let's Plays. Most people react with "why would I want to watch somebody play a video game?" so I just tend to keep quiet in the real worldy places.

There are probably a lot more (as I tend to like cult or niche things) but the one at the top of my head right now is the film Tank Girl, by no means a quality film and if it was recommended it would probably be a disappointment, but hey I think its awesome.

I read Pure Mathematics textbooks for fun. I know exactly where y'all are coming form.

Aaaaand The Machines of Loving Grace. A band with a very 90's rock sound, so naturally most people hate it. I was introduced to them by a series of Sci Fi Novels written by Carl Sagan's son, Nick Sagan, and haven't met anyone intrigued enough to read them yet.

Magic: The Gathering

A fantastic hobby with hundreds of hours of enjoyment. I don't encourage anyone I know to get into the game because it is WAY to costly. Whether you play casually or competitively, the hobby finds a way to gradually drain your wallet and those of your friends.

Legos...

I mean, sure, at first, they're fun to play with... but MAN! They're like cocaine. You get addicted... First it starts with one small set, then you have to buy an assorted box so you can let your imagination run wild. Then it all rolls out of control and you just have to have more so you can build bigger and better creations until it takes over your life and you can nolongerthinkstraightandeverythingjustseemstomergeintoONE!GIANT!!!CREATION!!!!!!!!

The movie 'Oldboy' I love that movie, I think it's one of the greatest ever made, but I would never recommend it to ANYONE! Anybody who's ever seen it knows why. The flashback, the ending, The BEYOND fucked up twist THE tongue scene, and OH GOD the hammer scene. My teeth hurt just thinking about it. Yet it is the greatest revenge movie ever.
Come now, right after that hammer bit is one of the best fight scenes in film (because of said hammer).

As for what I cannot recommend, both in the manga department: Saikano and Homunculus. One was not only a genre departure for me, but totally had a grip on me; I just don't have anyone in my circle who I could conveniently convince that it'll have the same effect for. The other IS my type of genre, but so off the wall...x.x

Funny thing about this question, just a few positive points and some courage, and you could most likely make a fair case to someone.

Beast Wars definitely (Animated Transformers spin off series). While it has a good story and especially interesting characters the animation by modern standards is quite low, also it can be a bit childish at times. I may be a bit nostalgia blinded as I used to watch it before going to pre-school some time ago.

Rigs of Rods. It's great fun to crash those soft body physics cars, but the control does it's best to replicate real driving, and is therefore very unintuitive. Also, it's hard to set up.

Atheism and whiskey.

I find that my love of both has led to many an argument and next day regrets.

Power metal. It's hard to play, invokes Dungeons and Dragons, can't be danced to, and won't get you laid. Man do I love it! \m/ R.I.P. Ronnie
It's also difficult finding anybody else who likes it. I've loadsa friends who like emo, screamo shit, loadsa death metal and thrash metal fans. I have very few friends who can appreciate something as over the top as Rhapsody of Fire.
Stuff like this, and folk metal aswell, I just can't get enough of.
Huzzah! I knew there were others who liked this!

OT: Probably swordplay. It hurts like hell, is a huge time and money sink...
But for me, it's the most fun thing I've ever done

Highschool of the Dead. It's very difficult for people to look past the huge amounts of fan service, which I can understand despite the fact that it's a pretty decent anime at heart.
