stupid game comparisons

Ok, so space marine just came out and with that comes the inevitable comparison to gears of war by stupid people

I say stupid because this always seems to happen when a new game comes out that is a new ip and it has some resemblance to a older popular game. Probably the stupidest thing that people tend to grasp is execution moves, which seems to be the main point people seem to make about space marine "you can execute your enemies with a chainsaw type thing? ITS COPYING GEARS OF WAR!!! BLEASGHOWAGAOHG" This happened with Darksiders also.

When Darksiders came out stupid people said it copied god of war, the only thing it had in common with god of war was that you could execute your enemies, if anything Darksiders copied the hell out of legend of Zelda and devil may cry. Hell, god of war is just a copy of final fight crossed with mortal combat. Both of which are just copies of older games.

Ahh, that was a fun rant. In short, don't be stupid about game comparisons, everything has been done before, it is exceedingly rare to find a truly new game.

Darksiders was a full on kleptomaniac to the point where they didn't even try to change the Portal colours. Still one of my favourite games mind, the only game it ripped off that I enjoyed nearly as much was Devil May Cry.

The stupidest one coming to mind was when Bulletstorm came out and people were saying how it was just another CoD ripoff. The only two things similar being the fact that it was in first person and it was a shooter. Seriously, it's like saying any game with dialogue options is a Mass Effect ripoff, or any game with a fantasy setting is ripping off Morrowind.

I dunno, the souls and "press B to win at everything forever" commands felt like they were lifted straight out. It wasn't as much God of War as people said but it had a fair bit of influence.

I saw someone in an old "Nintendo Power" letter to the editor section that read something like "You know when you think about it, Castlevania: portrait of ruin is identical to Super Mario 64, as in you jump in paintings on the wall. Where is all tha innovation we used to have?" This was replied to by a completely appropriate "Yeah, you're right, they are totally the same, except they are completely different." I lulled.

Meh. At their core all games are arguably similar. The only thing that really seems to change anymore are graphics and plot details.
