I'm so sorry, I honestly couldn't think of a decent title for this thread. Anyhoo:

Have you ever noticed that certain fanbases spend all their time seeking out the approval of the Mainstream, but once they achieve it, cry foul because the object of their affections is suddenly no longer 'indie', or has too many fans.

Grah! It doesn't matter which fanbase, be it Hentai lovers, Gamers, car lovers, furries, or gamers. Especially gamers.

Ten Years Ago:
Oh, I wish people would pay more attention to my gaming skills! I love gaming, but people still think I'm just an anti-social reject! I wish more people understood!

Earlier Today:
Goddamn Casual Gamers! Why the fuck do the have to hang around making the Wii Popular and cluttering up the gaming community! I wish they'd all just go away! Now that Gaming is popular and mainstream, I hate that people think I'm just one of them! Why won't they accept that I'm a Hardcore Gamer and not like them!

Okay, so I'm pretty worked up, but goddamn people, why can't you just be happy?!

Because all we seek in this harsh and convoluted world is to be in the spotlight, no matter why.

Oh and Cake.

Your avatar fits this quote

But yeah, people never know what they want. Look at all the crappy sequals to awesome films/games, and then look at the games that didn't make the sequals (which are ALWAYS crappy), and see how their fanbase whines about not having more to do

I'm in the latter camp

COME ON REBELLION, MAKE EVIL GENIUS 2 DAMNIT!

"People are bastard covered bastards with bastard filling"
- Dr. Cox

It's because that nerds like that want to be popular. they think they can be popular if what they are interested becomes mainstream. When it does become mainstream, they are still the unpopular nerds and need something to blame. So they blame the mainstream. Ta-Da!

I tend to handle popularity in the same way that someone at 10 Downing Street handles something that has started to tick.
But you make a fair point- I think that humans like latching onto something that they view as "underground" but once it is dragged screaming into the light feel as if their unique status has be broken.

to quote Yahtzee, "Fans are clingy complaining dipshits who will never be happy. the sooner you can shut out their shrill, tremulous voices, the sooner you will be happy."

{Paraphrased.}

I guess that people who don't like some things and complain must be angry with the world and hate everything. Hold on, that doesn't sound right.

Simple answer: People do not know what is best for them. This has been scientifically proven(by me), aswell as supported by OP's statement. This is why I don't believe in democrazy(see what I did thar?).

How so? proof? studies? theories? data?
Explain ALL.

Simple,
People are lost with all the options and choices in today's society. They need someone or something choosing for them.
Ofcourse, saying I could scientifically prove this is an exaggeration [Read: Internet humor], since such a thing can't possibly be proven, since "better" can actually mean alot of things (and can not be measured scientifically), this would rather be a theory of mine.

However, asuming my theory is true; people do not know what is best for them, thereby rendering a survey of people's opinions worthless, and prove nothing.

I rest my case, just trust me until you can prove otherwise.
