I'm sure these have been asked a couple of times before, but I want to find these out before i upgrade to a new system:

*Is the PS3 region-free or region-locked? For example, if I wanted a game that was only released in Europe could I import & play it if I wanted?

*I have heard that hardware upgrade is possible; where can I go to learn more about this?

Thanks in advance.

The games aren't region locked, but DVDs and Blu-Rays still are.

You can get information about upgrading on the internets. I hear they have this on computers nowdays.

Don't be a dick.

If by "hardware" you mean "hard drive" then I suppose you could upgrade... What do you mean by hardware upgrade? Because if you want to switch out the GPU I don't think Sony will help you with that.

You weren't exactly helping.

I've heard that it's region free, but someone who actually has a PS3 would be able to answer better than me.

As for the hardware upgrading, the only thing I'm aware of is that you can use almost any PC internal hard drive to replace the one your console came with. Any upgrades besides increased storage would be pointless, since it's a console, and games are optimized to run on its current hardware.

Region-free games and DVDs (my American ones work on my British PS3) but not sure about Blu-Ray.

The hard drive is a 2.5" sata drive. Remove one panel, swap out and you're done.

Pretty sure you need to format it in FAT32 first, but I haven't bothered yet, as storage on my PS3 hasn't become an issue and doesn't look like it ever will

Dammit, I DID mean "hard drive." Sorry about that.

And it IS region-free? That's great!

Thanks for the answers!

Little bit dude.

Anyways, I would like to know about PS3s backwards compatibility. There were some rumors on the interewbz a while ago that said Sony kinda fucked it up. One of the main reasons I would get one is because I wanna play old stuff, so I just want to know if there is any truth to that. Anybody had any problems?

Just to add another question.

The backwards compatibility thing is unfortunately true. ONly older consoles can actually play the full assortment of past titles.

Supposedly the way to check the console for backward-compatibility is to count the USB ports. If I remember what I read, compatible models will have four ports while newer incompatible consoles have only two.

Own a 60gig PS3, never had a hint of a problem with any of my PS2 games nor my PSone games and I own quite a few of each. I am sure though that 'certain' PS3s are not backwards compatible but I am not sure which ones are which ones.

It *used* to break down like this:

- The 20 and 60 GB models would have hardware backwards compatibility. This gave them pretty much full backwards compatibility with everything.
- The 80 GB model had an emulator that would simulate backwards compatibility. You can check specific games out here:
http://www.us.playstation.com/support/compatiblestatus
- The 40 GB model *never* had any backwards compatibility.

Nowadays, I believe that there is a new 80 GB model which does not feature even the backwards emulation. That's something to check out. For the record, my 80 GB model has the emulation and it has 4 USB ports on the front.

The most recently released 80gig model that comes bundled with a dualshock 3 controller does not support backwards compatibility. This is the console I have and it's very disappointing, especially since the PS3 firmware has the facility to create/emulate a PS2 memory card, but won't read PS2 discs - evne via software compatibility.
Microsoft did better with software emulation on the 360 and let's face it, the old XBox games didn't exactly set the world on fire (although I do appreciate the option of playing Jet Set Radio Future). Given how popular the PS2 was and how extensive it's library was, Sony really did a disserve to their customers by stripping BC out of their new console.

Unfortunately, 360s are region locked and it's pissed me off a whole fucking bunch since I spent good money on buying an American game to play on my Australia 360.

One would assume that to make the PS3 a competitive console, they'd enable all of them with BC. Only giving some consoles that option seems like a mistake by Sony, if I do say so myself.

I've heard you can install Linux on the PS3, if that's the case couldn't you run Linux and Bleem (or it's PS2 equivalent) and do it that?

I do hope that helps but I really can't see why people say the main reason they want to spend £100's on a new console is to play their old games?

Urban legend says that they did it not just to save money (having the extra hardware was costing them pretty dearly) but deliberately to force PS3 owners to focus on the new PS3 library instead of picking up cheap PS2 games (or even continuing to play their existing library).

I'm willing to accept that they did it for cost reasons alone (which saddens me because we didn't see a price cut along with the loss of BC) but the fact that they then failed to follow through by implementing software compatibility pretty much cements the idea that Sony really do want to make sure I'm buying Killzone 2, LBP, Uncharted etc instead of continuing to play Dragon Quest 8, Disgaea 2, God of War 2, etc.
Well yes, I do have a PS2 but unfortunately the memory card slot 1 is fried. I could replace it but as I've said before, I don't see why I should buy another machine when I have a $700 (AuD) machine that should make the old machine redundant, but doesn't because of a cost-saving decision by a company that didn't have the decency to pass that saving on to their customers.

You think they want to keep selling PS2s if they can help it? We're already two years into the PS3's ten-year-plan and the PS2 is still outselling it. I like that they kept support for the PS2 going unlike MS dropping the XBox like a hot rock once the 360 came out, but believe me, they want to kill off that hardware and make everyone with a PS2 buy a PS3. That would be their wet dream for this console generation.
