Vent thread coming up. I changed the alternator belt on this thing today, and it occured to me that the spark plugs due at least an inspection, if not a change. I have never taken them out in the past 8 months I've had this beast.

For those wondering what a Subaru is, play some Forza. Or look at this...

That is a Subaru. Not mine. Mine is more like this...

Same colour, more or less same model, but with a much shittier paint job and a lot of dings which I haven't gotten around to fixing yet.

Ok, these are fantastic cars and all but they are a pain in the arse at times. Most of the better Subarus have a boxer engine - that is, they have their pistons assembled opposite each other horizontally, rather than in a little row together all vertically. This means the engine is squatter, wider (meaning centre of gravity is lower and it has better handling), has less vibration (the piston opposite movement cancelling themselves out), and makes for a better all round engine.

But you try doing maintenance on the buggers.

See the square thingy by the cable with the red cap? That is the distributor housing. The 4 cables running off it go straight to the spark plugs, which need checking.

Over on the back-right I need to take out the wiper fluid tank to get at the bastard. But that's no biggie, an extra 15 minutes or so for what a mortals car would take two minutes for the entire operation, but hey ho. Can't have a high performance car without breaking some eggs.

But over the left there is a bulkhead in the way!

How the hell am I going to get those little buggers out? I love my Subaru, but she is a cruel mistress sometimes. Anyone have an idea?

Anyone else have a car which has a notoriously difficult thing to work on?

All I know about Subarus is that they're often driven by "cool guys" who think it's awesome to put a huge cake-server on the back and horrible rims on their wheels. I just can't make out whether the OP belongs in this category or not.

That said, give me an awesome old-fashioned beetle any day.
