build up a huge army and just molest your neighbors? or be really good at politics, I HEAR that the game is a bit whack, since when do Cav Archers and Elephants take down Apache Helos and tanks?

When the Apache Helos and the tanks aren't looking?

My best tip is play the tutorial. Or read the manual a lot. If all fails go check http://www.civfanatics.com/ for help and gameplay tips.

PS:Right on the start use your warriors to scout the terrain in search of tribe huts. Those huts give you bonus like gold/workers/settlers. It boosts your status at the start really fast.

Just keep playing the game until you begin to understand how it works. That's what I did, and I no longer fail at the game.

Or do this.

It's for balance. If having a tech advantage meant you could obliterate your opposition completely the game would be to easy.

play on settler if you are really that bad.

What I do is before I even start I decide what victory I am going for. Having a goal can help you immensely. Space race is the easiest so use that and use Roosevelt and its near impossible to lose.

A thing I did wrong a lot in the beginning was that I focused to much on improvments and research and had little to no troops. Even if you don't plan on making war, if your military is a joke your neighbours will attack just because you're an easy target.

So make sure to keep at minimum two units (good ones, not archers when everyone else have musketeers) in every city. I also like to fortify the border citeis with more than that, don't know if it matters but i feels safer, just in case.

I have always found diplomatic victory to be the easiest,

Use Frederick of Germany to get the great people bonuses, and to grow culture quickly. Also, try and nab some religions, because building the special temples are a great and necessary source of income as the game continues.

Finally, a game that takes spearmen seriously. I mean shit, I'm used to reading all these books and watching all these movies where spearmen aren't even in the same setting as tanks. Then Civ comes along and tells it like it is; an army of spearmen in a city can destroy a tank corps. Thank you for the incredible realism Sid Meier! Nothing immerses me in the reality of the game like watching two squares banging into each other. Nothing makes me believe in the genius that went into this title like seeing the square representing a sweaty mass of spearmen tearing apart a pile of attack helicopters. What did they fucking do jam their rotors with their corpses? Did they form together like Voltron and turn into a thousand foot tall spear and a huge robotic arm? Answer me Meier, you worthless sow!
What I think of when I hear of the Civ games. I suggest looking at a strategy guide if you're having that much trouble.

Nahhh, if you're facing Apache's, spearmen are the way to go. Choppers technically count as cavalry units, and spearmen are strong against cavalry. Makes perfect sense.

I prefer the apolyton website.

This doesn't really happen much anymore. Its all about life bars and stats, like every other game. If a tank is sitting with .1 units of health, a strike by an elephant might get lucky enough to destroy it. But face it, the tank is sitting there burning anyway, the elephant is not wrecking a finely tuned war machine single-handedly. This does not break realism.

Besides, as we learned from little bighorn, technologically inferior and experienced units can destroy individual, unsupported, more-advanced units. We also learned that such individual victories does not mean the culture survives.

A carefully maxxed defense in the middle ages with crazy experienced troops can get the defenses buffed enough to defend against single strikes by tanks or even a helicopter.

Modern weapons bypass walls and allow barrage from a distance, though. You would have to be just plain stupid to allow yourself to fall victim to middle aged defenses while having modern weapons, it means you just plain aren't doin' it right.

The typical problem I encounter in Civ 4 is that i dump so many resources into construction and resources, that when the invasion from two tech tiers below comes through my lands, I didn't build enough of my modern units to defend any of my stuff.

Do you have any tips for diplomacy? People always get pissed off because I never trade tech and never help in wars.
Well I always expand quickly. This means that I gain access to a lot of resources I can trade for brownie points and my population will be significantly higher than any other civilizations. You don't have to be friendly with all the other civilizations to win. I won a diplomatic victory whilst fighting a war with the second largest civilization.

Resources, ask for those you do not have in trade for technology (or just ask for money per turn). They'll usually accept...

Try to monopolize resources (valuable ones, such as Iron or, later on, Oil) and then everyone will kinda be dependent on being nice to you, or otherwise they'll loose their precious Iron/Oil/etc. that they need to make good units and run their cities ^_^

It's the best way to win, being a douchebag and forcing the other countries into faking smiles

There's a lot of factors to take into account, but basically I agree to help fight in the following situations:

1. Neighbor states who ask for help and are not military powers (ie help help i'm being invaded!)

2. Same religion as me

3. Are at war with someone who could be a threat if they get close enough to my borders/ the civ attacking them has been very warlike in the past

I agree to trade tech in the following:

1. Neighbor who I've got good relations with (ie, open borders, trade agreements, etc) asks

2. It's a fair trade - I'm not going to give radio technology in exchange for pottery. I never accept money for tech unless it's stone age or thereabouts.

3. If they ever demand tech, I say no and cancel an agreement or begin a military buildup at their borders to show I mean business.

You basically want to squash trouble where it pops up and foster good relations with civs that don't start aggressive wars. Once that happens it's pretty easy to guarantee enough votes to win the game.

Hatsephut, or any other Cultural/Spiritual leader. You have to make a conscious effort to lose if you play with Hatsephut and lose.

The combat is a bit screwy but you can actually focus on economy and tech yourself out like mad to get better stuff and you can also placate any enemies stupid enough to attack your advanced civilization with gifts. It all works out nicely when I do it without even focusing on armies until later.
