Sudden Ping Issues (solved)

I live in the UK and for the past year I have had a ping of about 40-50 when using any online ping test or when playing online games. Up until about 2 weeks ago that is. Suddenly, I struggle to get a ping below 400, making games pretty much unplayable. I have tried everything I can think of, resetting the router, switching wireless channels, using a wired connection. I set up a static IP and it went back down to 20ish for the rest of the night but I have been unable to re-create that. I thought because that worked it might be an IP address conflict so I tested it with just one device on the system but the same problems occurred. I have phoned up my ISP (Sky) but they claim it's nothing to do with them. My upload and download speeds are fine it's just my ping is too damn high.

Any suggestions would be appreciated because I'm stumped :'(

Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt

then type

tracert bbc.co.uk

if you put up the results I could help you find where the problem sits

The problem is outside your network I would expect 3 205 ms 207 ms 143 ms 02780b08.bb.sky.com [2.120.11.8] to have 10-20ms time on it. There are several possibilities at this point.

Contention: Broadband have anything up to 50 subscribers sharing the same pipe, but because its Christmas more people than normal are using it, hence the sucky pings

Bad weather: depending on what part of the country you are in, the bad weather has impacted services by flooding conduits and causing reroutes which has increased loading on pipes.

A problem in the sky network.

you could try ping/t bbc.co.uk to see how consitant your ping is.

I would give it week or so to see if things sort themselves out, after that I would get on to sky with the results of tracert to say categorically that the problem is outside of your network.
