Torchlight! Arcanum! Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale! Neverwinter Nights, maybe. And because I'm obstinate about them anyway, Earthbound and Mother 3. But seriously, the first two. Soon as I get a bit of cash, I'll be checking into Planescape: Torment. Oh, and Chrono Trigger. Just because.
I will have to definitely agree with Torchlight. It is really good! You could also try Terraria, it's a hit or miss game for a lot of people.

That is a good list. I recommend the STALKER games; easy to get on Steam.

King Arthur (also on Steam) was a pretty good rpg-ish strategy game, if you're into that sort of thing.

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines is also a really good pick, though unfortunately not on Steam so getting it is going to be complicated.
Actually dude it is on steam, is it worth £15 I've been waiting for it to be on sale for ages but I doubt it will ever be on the deals

Black Prophecy. It's a free to play space shooter MMO. If you liked Freelancer or Wing Commander, you'll love this game.

I know people have mentioned the Baldur's Gate series but I can't encourage you to play it enough, if you liked any RPG Bioware have done you will like this series. Also you can mod the first one so it has the same engine as the second making it much easier to get on with and improving some of the problems in the first (Like not pausing on the inventory screen, who thought this would be a good idea.)

But yeah, if you want a good story with a good stat based RPG system it doesn't get much better.

And for anyone who is interested the mod is called Baldur's Gate TuTu. Google and ye shall recieve.

It's on Steam for $19.99. I always want to get it, but I'm usually getting a different game. But VTM: Bloodlines has an amazing story, and is pretty unique.

If you're interested in playing daggerfall I'd checkout DaggerXL which is a port of the original game. [link]http://xlengine.com/[/link]
From the site said:
The XL Engine is an engine that runs the XL Games, which are enhanced remakes/ports* of the classic games. Essentially they are remakes in the spirit of a port, or to put it another way, they emulate the original games and then provide optional enhanced features on top in order to improve playability and visuals.

You also have Jeff Vogul's games over at Spiderweb Software http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/
Heh, beat me to it. Yeah, I'd definitely recommend trying out Avernum 4, 5, and 6. And the first 3 as well if you don't mind the terrible graphics (bad enough that you sometimes can't tell what something's supposed to be). If you want a huge open world where you can explore basically wherever you want whenever you want, and massacre an entire town for shits and giggles (just steal from or attack an innocent person, and everybody in that town and their dog - literally - will be out to kill you.) And also, you have a party of 4 whose stats you can customize from scratch.

The newest Spiderweb Software game is Avadon. You choose from one of 4 premade character classes (Blademaster, Shadowwalker, Sorceress, and Shaman), and people will join your party (each party member is also one of the 4 premade classes). The stat customization is less in depth than that of Avernum, but at least the game gives you the ability to customize your character's special moves/passive abilities with a skill tree that's like Diablo 2's, but far more balanced.

Planescape: Torment

Arcanum

Jade Empire

The Witcher

Alpha Protocol

The Dark Sun games were pretty fun when I played them as a kid but they are old. Very cool setting and I think they had a good amount of choices for the time period. Multiple ways to just escape the first area where you're a gladiator slave. Never could beat the final battle though too hard. They also have tons of bugs.

I would also recommend trying Deus Ex Invisible War, not as many RPG elements as the first one and not as good or long but still better than most games that were ever made.... ::hides::

Witcher 2 and Vampire Bloodlines look like they are both good games but I haven't personally played them.

BTW, I actually enjoy JRPGs but they are generally more linear storyline wise than WRPGS. I think that is why JRPGS generally have way less bugs htan WRPGS, when you have all the varibles involved with choices and stuff then it is going to probably result in more bugs. Funnily enough, it seems that just about every great WRPG has bugs. If a game was supposedly a great WRPG but had no bugs then I would be highly suspicious.
