STALKER. Any of the three games, really. It's beautiful and desolate, and certainly challenging. But download the graphical update for whichever one you play, it looks so much better. The graphic upgrades are named something like "STALKER Complete 2009" or "Call of Pripyat Complete".

EDIT: Damn, ninja'd twice in just a few minutes.
I thought Call of Pripyat Complete wasn't out yet. Clear Sky Complete is, but Pripyat just has Reloaded and AtmosFear.

I'll give a shout out to one of my favorite games, that's also rather difficult and unforgiving- Resonance of Fate for the xBox 360. Yes, a JRPG: but it's got realistic graphics, an interesting combat system that's mostly real time, and is really quite a gem. It's not unreasonable in its difficulty- but it does require you to be good with planning and knowing how to use your characters well.

Call of Pripyat Complete was released actually, I've been playing with it myself and the game looks brilliant. LINK

Will it work with AtmosFear3? Because I'd love the weather patterns and emissions with HD graphics.

TBH, I wasn't quite sure. It's probably not long now, though.

Dammit, now I'm going to have to reinstall these games and try once again to get through them. I suck at shooters though, so I'll probably not get more than a quarter of the way in again.

According to the info on the mods main website, that's actually already a part of the mod. Beyond that I don't know. I can say from experience however that the weather in Call of Pripyat with Complete is amazingly well done. Emissions are truly terrifying as well, probably one of the coolest effects I've ever seen in a game.

- Super Meat Boy!

It's challenging, loads of content, and you won't even get rage cause it's just plain fun.
I wouldn't be too sure about that... but it's still a good choice

Trying magicka alone is a real challenge.
This is only if the OP is sadistic.

Upper echelons in any PvP game, like:

- SF IV arcade edition
- Heroes of Newearth
- Bloodline Champions
- SC2
- TF2
- Arena (WoW)

Getting near the top in any of those will probably take more skill and planning than any single player I can think of. Some have balance issues, some dont.

Dead Space 2 is pretty rough. I'm playing on Zealot though, but they are relentless sometimes.

Ninja Gaiden on the NES. Im hard pressed to think of a more challenging game then that once you get up into the fifth and sixth levels

Besides that the most recent one I can think of is Demon's souls

Serious Sam has a hidden "Mental" difficulty where all the enemies are invisible until they attack you. Including the enemies that explode and instantly kill you upon impact.

Try Turok for the ps3 or Lair, Turok is a fps but it is the hardest godamn video game in the universe pretty much every other enemy has the same health as you and you can die very easily from almost everything, also armored core last raven for ps2 is decently hard and try any ninja gaiden game

Personally I don't get why you'd want a game to challenge you. I thought people played games to relax and unwind.

The real world affords me enough stress and challenge - I don't need to pay for more.

Some people dont want games that are just sunday drives. They want something that actually holds their attention.

I know Far Cry wouldnt hold my attention very long if it wasnt also rather challenging to play.
