If you like sci-fi then the hitchhikers guide series is awesome. Also anything by Terry Pratchett (he has a lot). If you're looking for one book, I read Cormac McCarthy's The Road a few weeks ago; amazing wasteland apocalyptic tale of a man and his son trying to get to the south of America after an unnamed disaster. Amazing stuff! It's also very addictive and never out stays its welcome.

Seconded. The Foundation series ate up all my summer holiday a few years ago, it's incredibly fun and addicting.

Also try the 'Dexter' novels by Jeff Lindsay if you're into detective stuff.

I'm a big fan of Christopher Brookmyre. If you like crime novels, Brookmyre is the lovechild of Ian Rankin & Carl Hiassen, but with funnier one-liners.

If you enjoy good cyberpunk, Jeff Noon's books should give your brain a headfuck. Vurt is a modern classic, and Pixel Juice is an awesome series of short stories.

Finally, Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman have been mentioned on this thread already - Why not kill two birds with one stone & go for "Good Omens" - A brilliant read, in the vein of 'Dogma'

Other nominees for good novels: Douglas Coupland, Chuck Phalaniuk, Scarlett Thomas, Early Clive Barker (don't bother with the later stuff...it's crap), or Phillip Pullman.

I also vote the Road; it is class.

Other the that:

The Riftwar Saga by Raymond E. Fiest. 3 books about a war bettween 2 diffrent worlds with all sorts of ancient evil going on. Fastsy writing at its best.

The Beach by Alex Garland. Forget the shit film. This is one of the best books I have ever read. I have finished 5 times now and I'm still not sure what it is about.

Shogun by James Clavell. An English man is shipwrecked on Japan in 1600, its all about his life there and how he survives. Epic.

Star of the Sea by Joseph O'Connor. 6 people on a ship escaping the Irish famine. All of them have secrets and all are connected in some way. The best book I have read in the last 12 months.

Persian Fire by Tom Holland. Charts the rise and fall of the worls fist superpower; the Persian Empire. A fantastic narrative history.

The Gallic Wars by Julius Caesar. Come on! It was written by Caesar what else do you need to know?! Ok, its an acount of his, illegal, war in Gaul. He wrote it to get the plebs on his side, it reads like a novel, kinda. Plus its 2000(ish) years old!

its like scarface meets parallel universes. its about drug runners hiding out in columbia, learning about quantum physics, and telling thier tale of how they ended up where they are. its a true story without it being given away easily.(he has to hide it or he'll get arrested)

There are some incredible classics such as bleak house, The Lord of the Rings, Lord of the Flies and so on. I would recommend these for more "serious readers". For someone trying to get into reading I would suggest some newer, lighter material. I recently found "Graceling" By Kristin Cashore captivating.
