Hello fellow escapists. This is my first attempt at a thread so lets see how it goes.

I am beginning to write a novel. I have the characters, the storyline, even the ideas for sequels.
The one thing I can't come up with is the name for the land in which it takes place. A bit of a description is it's a large continent with many different environments and habitats with a large desert, a mountain range a forest and a volcano scattered across it.

Its a magic adventure sort of book so my question is can someone suggest me good name for the land. your help would be appreciated.

inb4 Vvardenfell!

=P

All kidding aside, it would depend on word constructions/phonemes that you've used for the rest of your names & labels otherwise it might just sound hideously out of place regardless of what we suggest. What's your main character/place of birth etc. called?

Main character called Sen Kamenzy. His home town is called Kohnar. Really haven't thought of a proper language because they mostly just speak English. I'm just rolling with what sounds good.

I do pretty much the same thing, though I've developed a synthetic language to that end. Still, I'm generally loathe to recommend names to people for literary purposes, because it's genuinely about the writer's aesthetic. Now, the word I had in mind was 'Mondus'. That makes sense (after a fashion) for me, but you might think it sounds unfitting for your world.

I could spew out the numerous alternative names I have for my fictional nation-state, its provinces, principalities, margraviates and counties, but in the end, that only helps myself see how well it reads. With things like this, shoot just for general ideas, you might like certain syllables and pronunciative patterns (e.g. thanks to being a FFC fan, I chucked the Belgian name ending 'branque' at everyone I can think of).

Still, for what it's worth, my contribution is 'Mondus' (though that suddenly sounds a bit crappy).

Good luck.

And just a quick question, 'Kamenzy', is that pronounced ka-MENT-see, or KA-men-zee?

Orsrae or Prerog. Nah, they were in my captcha.

In all seriousness, if I'm thinking for names of places I usually pick out the terrain and base the name around that. This place has desert, mountains and a forest so I can't really think. But captcha's can give you inspriration. Ludnum, Kraeseg, Arilen, Frog. Theres 4 more captcha words.

Maybe name it something related to a desert, since that's the largest feature? I was thinking like Arimont or Aridessol or something like that.

Hmmm. So it should fit with the standard fantasy & magic vibe? ...

'Severann' sounds about right to me.

Since there's not really a whole lot to go on there - seems like a fairly diverse landscape - I'm just going to make up a bunch of random names and throw them out there. If there's one you like, it's yours.

Felstein
Torphyrrean
Orpheon
Polypolous
Banshamn
Tylnyth
Terrarean

Very little meaning behind most of them. A couple of them are vaguely related to the nature of earth and soil, or to the diverse setting, but they're pretty much a bunch of syllables I mashed together. If you've got a more specific theme in mind, let me know.

Well if the characters all speak English, you could name it something that actually has discernable meaning. I dunno, the Mother Land, or something to that effect. Does that make any sense? You know, something fairly simple, but relatively descriptive.

Equestria!

Engelgard.
Disheim. (Dees-hame)

I dunno. I guess I'd need to know more about the story and place to come with good suggestions, but even then I'm not good at naming things.

Ishtal :D
Its the province of a large mainland.
Mostly covered in highland-ish hills and rocks.
Food is scarce at times because of the extremely short growing seasons.
The inhabitants are mostly refugees from other countries who were sent here for "temporary" shelter, but took up permanent residence after several years, due to the discovery of a large underground cave system full of Mythril, and other enchanted ores.
Their blacksmiths are regarded as some of the best in the land at the forging of magical protective, and enchanted gear/trinkets.

But thats just my 2cents!
