Good taste there.
From the Battlestar/Doctor Who, I'd advise Firefly, if you haven't seen it already - it only lasted a season, but it's funny, well cast, and has the technological feel of Battlestar - probably because they both had the same special effects studio. And I see that Deep Space 9 has already been suggested - I'd say it's the best of the Star Treks, but The Next Generation is also a fun diving off point - I got into both that and Doctor Who at around the same time. There's also LOST - some complain that it's just ridiculous, but I find it's a strong show with interesting characters and gradually escalates the suspension of the disbelief so that if you're watching from the beginning, it'll feel pretty natural - particularly if you're used to Doctor Who.
As for comedy, I see Blackadder Season 2 and onwards on the list, and I have to echo that.
There's various historical dramas that're quite good - The Borgias (Jeremy Irons as a corrupt Pope), I Claudius (Dated, but still good), Deadwood (American Frontier).
