So I'm working on a new story this summer, and while most of the characters are going to have fairly plain names there's also going to be a quartet of non-human characters who are almost like family.

As such, I would like these four to have more fantasy-ish names that are connected to each other in some way. Possibly historical since they have longer lifespans than any human, though nothing cliched like the Chinese Zodiac or the Elements. I was thinking of using biblical ones but worried that would be too pretentious. Ideas?

You could try something from http://themesopotamian.org/cgi-bin/forum/main.pl?noframes;read=25204 . Most of them sound almost familiar and the others are biblical. Personally I have always liked Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego as names. They are biblical but not ones that are in common use and I would pick a fourth from the list.

Given the names John, Peter, Tobias, Bart, Matthew, Phillip, Simon, Benjamin, Daniel, James and Andrew are all biblical names it wouldn't be that pretentious.

Brain(Steve),Bill,Langley and Big Bill,sorry I couldn't resist.

OT: yeah what Hoplon said would be best. I guess if you could go with the four gospel disciples : Matthew,Mark,Luke and John. Maybe Abraham,Ezekiel,Elijah, and Issac. Sorry not good with naming people.

I'd argue that Biblical names are just as cliched as Chinese zodiac or element names.

Although you could name theme after the four fiends from Final Fantasy IV Dante's inferno. That would be pretty awesome. (Scarmiglione, Cagnazzo, Barbariccia, and Rubicante, in case you were wondering)
