Suggestion for the forums

After thinking it over for a while, I think I've come up with something that could make the forums better. There have been countless times where I, and others as well I'm sure, have gone onto a thread to leave a comment, only to find that someone else has said exactly what I was planning on posting. Since simply quoting people and saying that you agree with them has recently become merits for warnings or other punishment, why not add something like the "Like" button on Facebook? It doesn't have to be exactly that necessarily, but a thumbs up or something that shows you agree with someone's comment. That way you can express your opinion if someone's already said it (without the low-content posts), along with possibly some other benefits.

Any thoughts? Good idea/bad idea? Any reason why this couldn't work? Any feedback (other than trolling obviously) is welcome.

Apparently no one cares... is there any way I can just suggest this to the mods?

This idea has been suggested before, and the mods are aware of it. They choose not to implement it though. If I had to guess why it's becuase they want to promote discussion, and a "like" feature would encourage a user to simply favor a comment rather post leave their own opinion. Just a guess though.

hmmm imo you'd still have people giving their opinion if they have something to say a like button would just reduce the number of replies that just agree with what people said...like my initial reply to this thread before i quoted you ;P

Edit: Come to think of it...most people would post a short reply anyway to simply show that they agree/disagree...a like/dislike would be anonymous

Yup, that's generally the idea. Although another reason is that a "like" system generally encourages people to make comments just for popularity's sake, rather than for discussion.

If there was a "like" button, thousand's of comments would be made by people just wanting to get likes.

It's one of those things I think is good "in theory" but can have flaws "in practice"
