ok so I'm 17 and school just closed and I was thinking of working this summer. Thing is though, in 3 weeks I'm leaving for a month to counsel at a summer camp, and then I'm going on a week vacation with extended family. After that, it will only be a couple more weeks before school starts again.

If I got a job before I left, I worry that it would be bad form to disappear for over a month after only a couple weeks of working. Same if I got back, I would only be able to work for a few weeks before school, and I think I'd be up against applicants who wouldn't need to leave for more than a third of the summer (not many jobs around here for us high schoolers so competition is a bit rough )

So should I still look for work, or hold off until I can find one I can do after school or on weekends during the school year?

Look for a job telling them you can work for three weeks, and get a three weeks contract. Some places are fine with that, and if they're not they just won't hire you. Then after you're back do the same thing. As long as you know the exact dates you can't work, you can give them the dates right away, and it's much better than taking a job and then leaving without a warning after a few weeks.
Some jobs even hire you for just a week or over a weekend, so look for temp stuff and jobs that have a lot of coming and going (such as fast food) and be clear about your availability, and that should be fine.

Try applying at a temp agency. My friend has had a lot of success with them. Some of his jobs have lasted only a week, others months. Just make sure to tell them that a short term job is what you're looking for. And maybe it will lead to more jobs when you can work again.

My honest advice as a grown 30+ year old man to a 17 year old? Don't work unless you have too. Once you start the working life, it's fairly perment after that.(granted into todays job market... maybe not, but well, i doubt your looking for a creare at 17.) I've been at it for nearly 15 years now, and my longest vacation in all that hasn't even been a full week. Granted, that's more *my* doing, and how i use my vacation time, I take long weekends, and don't travel much because it's not my thing but, eh, if you can get away with taking a summer off, i say, do it. If you can't and need too, or just really want to work, be up frount with your potental employiee. They may be cool with it. It never hurst to ask. And if they aren't, look into a temp service or some kind of temp work.

Either way, GL man. Enjoy your summer. ;-)

I was thinking of the same thing man. Working sucks and takes your life away. At that age I'd only get a job if my parents forced me too.

Even if you do apply for this job, our age group has the highest unemployment rate at 24%(assuming your in America) and the fact of the matter is most people have already scooped up the summer jobs by now man. So I'd say just don't worry about it, plus you'll have plenty of time to work later.
