Hello friends,

I am from outside the USA and was curious to learn how the start of a litigation process works. Any information, or links to articles would be most appreciated.

Basically, when someone sues another person. My understanding is, the person getting sued needs to be sent a 'summons', which is a document asking them to show up to court.

My main questions are, does this summons document actually contain the details of WHY they are being sued (I imagine it does), and if so, how detailed is the information?

Furthermore, is there a way someone could actually verify that the summons is actually real? ie, is there some court website I can search for this upcoming case etc?

And finally, is there alot of variation in how summons work between US states?

Thanks for your time.

You probably don't need anything horribly detailed for this, so try checking out your state or countries court system sites for an overview. You could probably find a decent overview on Wikipedia.

Generally speaking a summons will contain information on who is suing you and when you're expected to present yourself. If you doubt a summons you've received is real, you should be able to call your local court house and check on it.

Damn... totally misunderstood the threads title! I was about to say it depends on the game, and that usually it involves a character raising their arms and muttering a phrase...

But that is now completely irrelevant...

Unfortunately I am also from outside the US... and I am afraid I don't have a scoobies! I know in the UK that they are pretty detailed when telling you you are to appear in court... but not sure on the US... sorry!
