Or. . .
What if gaming's most famous hero (mario) and villain (bowser) traded places?

If you're thinking this came out of left field, well maybe. There is an event on Super Smash Brothers Brawl, super bowser brothers, where you have to get bowser to the flag at the end, a la Super Mario Brothers, while being constantly accosted by angry Marios. That's what got me thinking: How would video game history and the games of today be different if those two swapped places?

Well for most shooters it would just change in the sense that the main characters are Russians and the bad guys are Americans. Other then that it wouldn't change.

Samus. As in the title.

You play as a Metroid, seeking to kill all the bounty hunters. At the end of Super Samus, the Mother Bounty hunter nearly kills you but The Baby Samus comes by and saves your life.

I may have just alienated or appeared as a genius to a lot of people.

Ganondorf: The Game.

Your goal is to restore balance to the universe by slaying the most annoying fairy in your plane of existence. The problem is that fairy has a seemingly-invincible 10-year old with a tunic and a sword protecting her. Lure them into traps by recruiting monsters, building dungeons, and burning down villages. Create a chase spanning a decade!

Donkey Kong Jr. did this idea with the series before Bowser came along.

As far as reversals go, I think Chrono Trigger would be fascinating. You are an effectively-immortal space parasite that has to infect a planet, feed on it as you carve history to your whims, and destroy not only the world, but the most dangerous creature of all: protagonists. You could latch onto the "genetic material of all living creatures" bit and incorporate some evolution mechanic.

Left 4 Life, you just curb stomp four people into the ground repeatedly. Oh, the alternate title is Zombie Panic! and can be found on Steam.

I think'd be interesting to play as some sort of disembodied spirit like Sauron. The goal is to plunge the world into darkness and rule over it, but overt acts attract extremely motivated and powerful heroes to bring you down. The goal is to whittle away at their powerbase, accepting defeat after defeat, but leaving dark artifacts and secret minions in wake of each cataclysm, tools for use on the next awakening until finally, on that long hoped-for day, lay eye upon a world where the races of good lay riven by corruption, strife, and disease, easy pickings for the final battle.

An easy one would be playing as the Angelous in the Darkness. From playing 2, you realize Jackie is somewhat the bad guy of the series, so the flip would be natural.

And while I'm here, have you play as the head of any evil organization from any game. I want to release the T-virus in a random city just for lulz.

Skyrim would end up being a game where you play as Alduin who has to go on a quest to kill a custom-made Dragonborn and destroy the world.

Playing as a world-eating dragon with a very deep voice...... any thoughts on that?

Speaking of the title: did you ever play Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door? There's a rather amusing part in that where you play as Bowser in something that looks rather similar to an actual level from the first Super Mario Bros.

So would this mean that in Metroid Fusion, the player controls the x-parasites?
Or castlevania, the player is now Dracula, and must fight off whichever Belmont has come to (only temporarily as any castlevania series fan knows) put down Dracula. Seriously, how does dracula not have the largest army of inevitables ever assembled after him? He has been slain and came back for a full millenium in the castlevania storyline.

I like that idea, a game of constant defeat, but your goals are not to win, but establish some underhand, secret thing that will eventually give you the power to succeed in the end, because for a staple villain, death is never permanent. It's really an idea that's never been done before. That'd be cool!
