When I woke up this morning I found out my school was canceled. I wasn't sure why as the roads were not very bad. I watched the news for a few moments and realized not only was it -18F below, but there was also a wind chill of -25Fish.

Alright So two questions for you guys.
What temperature do you think is cold enough to cancel school?
What is the coldest temperature you have ever had in your area?

Here? The coldest ever was -1 during winter. At the moment it's an average of 35 often hitting 40 and above (centigrade, metric system FTW) That's anywhere between 95 and 110 Fahnrenheit.

Coldest EVAR? Probably when I was in Michigan visiting family. I swear my neck froze up - probably about the same temprature as your enduring at the moment.

Sufficient cold would be around -80 because it's the temperature where tires crack, and your eyes freeze in their sockets.
Wow that's brutal. I suppose since were not to used to the cold weather. Also our buses run on diesel and I guess there's something about it turning to a gel at around -15Fish.

We had schools closed once in the last 10 years, when we had -5 one day and -25 next day.

Too bad my part of country had holidays...

Never seen it lower than -10 in the UK but I live in the south so that's standard.

Been in -40 with the wind chill in Canada somewhere (Ontario?).

Never seen school snow cancelled that I can remember. Once a car share I went with couldn't get out the drive for snow so we had the day off (that was the tits).

It would take -25° to cancel school here but the coldest I know of in the last 10 years was about -17°.

I've had 4 snow days this year counting this one =]. The first 3 were right in a row because of a huge ice storm.

It depends on many things. A few weeks back Las Vegas got about 6inches (I know, I was thinking it too- Suck it Global Warming) anyways they had to redirect all the flights here to Salt Lake, now here then wouldn't give it a second glance. But they wern't prepared with salt and road salt on the go. Also when I liked in Washington for a while right on the coast it'd be very moast when made the road go very icy. It would often get cancelled without very lows or even snow. So I say you can't decide by tempurature alone, but region.

And for the coldest temperature, nothing major about -5, only it was while I was walking back from the pool hair froze up a little...

Way back when, the word was that if the temperature hit 45 Celsius, school would be canceled. One day it got close, hit 43. We were sitting still, watching this thermometre on the wall, trying to will the thing past 45 in the hopes that school would be immediately canceled. Sadly, this never occurred.

I've never been in sub-zero temperatures. As I have the choice not to be, I doubt it'll ever happen.

Ah the chance in my town of Albury that it will become too cold for school is very slim.

In Britain our public transport craps out if it hits -5 or so. You generally can't get to work then. Or it takes ages.

I can work from home so it's not a problem for me.

All i'll say is, it was -11c according to my car, and i had no coat. Just standard trousers and shirt. I actually don't own a coat, since i never use them, usually in shorts by March.

I'm actually pretty certain my blood contains anti-freeze.

Though, i remember once at Portsmouth Uni, i was outside at 3am in my Boxers after some bright spark decided to microwave a pizza box and set off the fire alarms. Which was handy, since it was in the middle of a Fireman strike, and we had to wait an hour for a Green Goddess to turn up.
Wow, My friend is kinda like you. The kid won't wear a coat and he runs around in shorts this time of year. In fact yesterday we were at pizza hut and the waitress asked him if he was crazy because he was wearing a zip up hoody and shorts.

I woke up in a pool of my own sweat here in Melbourne. Last night was the 3rd hottest night in Melbourne's recorded history.

So about 94 Fahrenheit.

It's kind of cool. We threw out the water that was left over from boiling the eggs this morning and some froze in the air =o.

Where I live (Indiana) is a really goofy place temperature wise. Last summer we got close to 100F and this winter we're constantly below zero.

In March 08 it was over 39 Celsius for 15 days straight. That's 102.

-30 today in Toronto, apparently. Plus the west end of the city lost power, so many poor bastards froze all night long.

Im lucky enough to live in a moderate climate, Washinton State, West of the Cascade Mountain Range, so we get all our weather from the Pacific. Lowest we got here in, IIRC 35 years, was just this past national coldsnap, with the lowest being 17°F with a windchill to 5°F.

thanks to the cold im currently on day two of a six day weekend, and its currently about minus twenty degrees F. i think that they decide not based on temperature but on whether they can get the buses running. cuz sometimes they dont start if its cold enough. but whatever, if theres no school, then who am i to complain about getting to sleep in?
