-30 today in Toronto, apparently. Plus the west end of the city lost power, so many poor bastards froze all night long.
That really sucks. The week before christmas my family lost power so I stayed at a friends house. Unfortunately his heater was broken and we all sat around huddled in blankets.

thanks to the cold im currently on day two of a six day weekend, and its currently about minus twenty degrees F. i think that they decide not based on temperature but on whether they can get the buses running. cuz sometimes they dont start if its cold enough. but whatever, if theres no school, then who am i to complain about getting to sleep in?
Haha ya. The only thing that could make this day better is if my gamefly game would arrive.

My hair froze yesterday when I went to class.
Needless to say, class was still going. I don't think it could get to the subzero temperatures here, so its all about the icy roads.

It's actually nice and warm here this week, I love living in a Chinook zone. However it'll probably drop to a nice and frickin freezing temperature before too long.

I'm in the Northeast US, and it's -17 right now on my campus. :( I'm struggling, even though I'm used to really effing cold weather. I think they should cancel it when it gets bad enough for there to be a public safety issue, like ruining tires, or uh, maybe shriveling up into a tiny ball just walking to the next building. :p

It's really hard to call though. My old high school canceled once when it hit -30 and the pipes were in danger of freezing, I believe.

Where is global warming when you need it?

Was it wet or just the inherent moisture? Cause I've had my hair freeze when I walked to class in temperatures around 15 degrees right after taking a shower. Of course it was about a mile from the dorms to the classroom so it had plenty of time. Here in Rochester the schools rarely close. Only if it's like 25 below or there's 2 feet of snow since a lot of the city kids walk to school.

Your school closed for temperature? Sweet jesus where do you live, I must move there. Yesterday we should have atleast had a delay because there was about 3 inches of snow on the ground, but we had a snow day last week so the bastard idiots who are in charge of my school district decided to go ahead and have a full day of school even though the buses were sliding around the roads and a lot of them were late. Today I think the wind chill was around -5 this morning, but I don't think we would lose school for temperature.

It's about -20 where I am, and we're at school because they won't close it for anything short of the Apocolypse. If they can only see three Horsemen riding down the street, then the busses can run.

Here in canada, we're in the -35 (with wind) for a week now and all schools are still open as far as I know.
Couple years back, we had -65 in Montreal and schools were open. I guess it's a question of habit.
Sufficient cold would be around -80 because it's the temperature where tires crack, and your eyes freeze in their sockets.
we had -35C wednesday and my school closed... then we had -38C thursday and now we're at -35C again. School has been closed for 3 days straight!! In Northern Ontario anyway... (though I heard that Sudbury, which is an hour away, wasn't closing school.)

apparently me and I Ancient I live somewhere in the vicinity of each other. for the past 2 days, it has been -40 (C or F, same thing) with the windchill putting it to -45 c. But thats not that bad, in the end of december, we had an extremely long cold snap that lasted over 20 days where the temperature didn't get above -25 c, one day dipping into the record books with a -55 c. That was but ass cold, and I still had to write finals during the entire thing.

When I woke up this morning I found out my school was canceled. I wasn't sure why as the roads were not very bad. I watched the news for a few moments and realized not only was it -18F below, but there was also a wind chill of -25Fish.

Alright So two questions for you guys.
What temperature do you think is cold enough to cancel school?
What is the coldest temperature you have ever had in your area?

HAHAHAHA! Pansy! Yesterday, I had school. It was -28 air temp (At the lowest) yesterday, and with windchill, it was -50. ALL DAY!

Oh, and we broke our old record yesterday. It was our coldest. Today is 6 above at highest and -30 with windchill... And I work today. (I push carts out to peoples cars...)

I'd have to travel far to experience the debilitating temperatures for my make.
-10°C is annoying, but you can still go for a jog if you're covered.
-30°C is detestable, but pouring jugs of water onto the sidewalk to make miniskating rinks is fun.
-40°C, yeah, thereabouts. (-40° is where Fahrenheit and Celsius Converge)

School is closed if there's one foot of snow overnight. Vancouver is a bit more used to Snow than Toronto apparently. Last year the city was basically shut down due to an inch of snow.
