I'll just quote what I said on Destructoid:

"Mario Maker for 3DS"

Fuck yeah

"No online play"

Fuck you
Ah! I've been wondering if the Raiku on Destructoid is the same Raiku here haha or if it was just some super crazy coincidence with the same avatars and so (been having a string of crazy coincidences happen to me lately). Soz for hitting ya out of the left field with that, I also frequent Destructoid and leave comments there so I keep spotting you now and then thinking "Hey! Raiku from Escapist?!"

Anyway, yeahhh.... isn't creating and sharing levels online kind of the game's biggest selling point? Regardless I'm doubly screwed getting this anyway, because there's no 3DS players let alone people who will buy Mario Maker to create levels remotely near me to share levels with anyway.
That's me. And I've been starting a series on there called Raiku's Haiku's. I already have a few people liking it and any support encourages me. I plan on doing ep 3 after seeing Kubo and the Two Strings.

People love it when you e-beg.

Nintendo I don't understand you anymore. You do know what made Mario Maker for the Wii U so successful, right? How about instead of making a stunted version on the 3DS you add more features and creative versatility to the one on the Wii U? I'd still like to be able to place water in overworld levels.

Why even bother with releasing it on the 3DS then?
Well, there can be all kinds of reasons - region-specific market research, hardware issues, software issues, time constraints, etc. We ordinary mortals can never hope to understand all the intricacies of the corporate world.

I think your best bet is to ask an actual professional.

"Hi kids!"
"Hi Uncle Nintendo!"
"Did you like Super Mario Maker?"
"Sure did Uncle Nintendo, it was a good game."
"Good?"
"Well it was very limited compared to what you actually use to make Mario levels and-"
"Well, who cares what you think, because some mad people though it was one of the best games of last year."
"Okay, I don't see-"
"So because some people liked it, and because the Wii U is selling like a spunk cake full of spiders, we're bringing it out on the 3DS"
"Ooh, that sounds good. We'll be able to design and play all those player-generated levels on the go and millions more people can join in."
"Well actually, this version will remove online level sharing and replace with that Streetpass feature that no-one uses. Not only that, but we'll only let you play our own boring levels and a list of random user-made levels from the Wii U version that will most likely be novelty levels."
"Doesn't that remove the main reason to play the game?"
"Why are asking so many questions? Stop asking questions and say 'Thank you Uncle Nintendo'."
"Thank you Uncle Nintendo."
"Now kids, we all know there's more than one way of showing your gratitude."

I feel this would be good, but only if you know quite a few friends who will also get the game. There are a few communities for 3DS players after all :)

I feel that this wouldn't go down well however because everyone will be straying away from it for the reasons of not being able to register your levels online.

As this is obviously a big issue, and I don't see why Nintendo did it. That is the only way to go for it =/ *sigh*
