Super Mario Sunshine?

Hmm well in my opinion, i always considered super mario sunshine as one of the best mario game. back when this first came out, a lot of people complained that it was not like mario 64, people looked down on it because this. while when it saw it, yes it was something new, but to me it was better than 64. it had a new gameplay, it had better characters (they actually talk...except mario but im used to that). and even nowadays, sunshine is better than most of the new mario release.
But then again it might have been something with sunshine that u didn't notice. but all an all, i still have my gamecube, still have sunshine, and i will still play it.

Apparently, there's an angry mob outside my door that's going to kill me for saying that I never played the mother of all 3D Mario platformers... I think Luigi's Mansion kinda helped establish a bias towards the Mario Franchise at that point. After the N64, we were ready for a new Mario game, and our first taste came in the form of a gimmick based spin-off title where Luigi sucks up ghosts, definitely not what people want from a Mario game all about platforming. So when Sunshine came out people latched onto the whole FLUDD mechanic which was being discussed in every single preview and review of the game as a "core mechanic" and I'll admit that I also felt this wasn't going to be a true Mario game, it was another gimmick based game that lost track of what a great Mario game was...
until I played it at one of those little gameplay kiosks at Walmart.
The thing about FLUDD is no matter how gimmicky it may seem, it's built ON TOP OF very tight Mario controls, all the classic Mario style platforming is still intact and the level designs are amazing. What got me was the degree of interaction it gives you with your environment. It may seem a little silly now but back when I first played it, the fact that I could shimmy up any given tree and do a backwards somersault ground stomp off it kind of sold the game for me. It was just amazing how well the game was designed. I enjoyed the tropical paradise quite a bit and nothing about the game really annoyed me, even the FLUDD mechanic was well designed, it enhanced standard Mario gameplay instead of detracting from it.
Anyway that's my two cents, I believe because of FLUDD people didn't want to give it the chance to be considered a "true blue" Mario game, especially in the wake of the Luigi's Mansion spinoff.

I never owned an n64 because it was too expensive, so I never played Mario 64 before playing Sunshine.
I love that game, and I think the main reason people don't like it is because they're blinded by nostalgia goggles. And the backlash may be the reason there hasn't really been an open world Mario game since.

I didn't know people had an issue! To me it's one of the best Mario games, it's also one of my favourite games for the Gamecube. I thought Fludd was quite fun and I liked it because it was something new and something different. To be completely honest I had a lot more fun with it than I did with Galaxy and a little more than I had with Mario 64. I found the levels to be enjoyable and fun, the music was great, the mini games were a lot of fun too. I liked the open world.
As it happens I may just have a DS copy knocking about somewhere. I got given one as a present and had one bundled with my original DS. I still have mt N64 but no Mario64 cart. I'll take a look for it tonight but beware - it's nowhere near as good as they say. I honestly had more fun with Sunshine. And Spyro. And Jak and Daxter. And DEFINATELY Ratchet and clank (but to be fair, that was a different kettle of fish altogether)

2. The fact that you've listed all of the other 3D platformers I have played (and still own) worries me a little... (Oh well... I had to lower my expectations somehow before trying out Mario 64, anyway...)

I think it's a great game personally. I still prefer the Galaxy games and Mario 64, but Sunshine stands tall in my list of Mario favorites. I can see why people would dislike it on the surface, yet I would can't agree with the common complaints.
In fact, one way to help get Mario relevant again would be to put him in a strange setting like Sunshine, and make the game based around a new mechanic like FLUUD.
Let's put it this way, it actually made a game full of water based levels fun to play. Considering how water levels are usually the bane of my existence, that's an amazing feat.

Oh, believe me I know. Personally Super Mario Sunshine is my favorite 3D Mario game. I love the tropical setting, the exploration I can do, and have fun just generally playing it.
I will admit, it is the weakest out of the 3D Mario games, but it's still a great game. In fact I'm playing through it again right now.

It was fine just nothing amazing I played and finished it but it was pretty forgettable and definitely not on the same level as some other Mario games. That said I much preferred it to Mario 64 I just dont get that game I loved Mario when it came out and got it straight away and absolutely hated it even now I cant play it I just cant see anything good with that game. Mario Bros 3 is still my favourite with Galaxy right behind.

I must admit that it has always confused me when people spit vitriol about Super Mario sunshine but it was one of the most played games on my Gamecube, along with Paper Mario: The thousand year door, Luigi's mansion and Resident Evil 2, and stands as one of my favourite Mario games ever, alongside the aforementioned Paper Mario: The thousand year door, because they tried to do something different with the franchise.
