Dinosaurs. Cavemen. World War II. The Beatles. Super Mario World for the SNES. "Well, that's fine and good, SayAnything, but why must you spout random topics?" It's all for their common ground! Each topic is a classic piece of history that brings out the curiosity, joy, and interest in the souls of children and adults alike.

Confession: this pubescent ADD-ridden 15-year-old child was not alive to see 1991, and subsequently the release of Super Mario World . Do the math and you'll find that I was actually crafted in 1993. However, I'll tell you now that this does not matter one bit. Super Mario World is not a "You HAD to be there!" experience; the gem is an enjoyment for those born in the 60's as well as those who've yet to hit their first decade. A timeless classic, Super Mario World - and the Mario franchise as a whole - is an award-winning, pleasant experience that raised (and continues to raise) the bar higher for the development of future titles.

For those who know the experience, play along with me here: your parent, relative, or wallet decides you've earned a reward: you're bestowed a box. The contents of the box have two items that will change the next ten years of your life: a Super Nintendo Entertainment System and a cartridge labeled "Super Mario World ". How exicting! What splendor! You rip open the box, run to your room, and, almost instantaneously, pop in the last "Video In" cord and hit the "ON" switch on your game box.http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p105/Icy_X-Cel/Reviews/1175404376-00.png
Cue our jumping hero in trousers. Super Mario World is a 2D platformer which follows Mario, the red-suit-wearing, jumping plumber and video game legend, and his brother Luigi, on a journey to defeat the evil Bowser and his Koopa Kids and create a peaceful land for the Yoshi to live in. Mario and brother visit different themed lands and hundreds of levels, each littered with baddies looking to stop them in their tracks. It's up to you, the gamer, to navigate Mario over goombas, koopas, thwomps, cheep cheeps, lakitus, and a plethora of other baddies, your mind all the while focused on running through the final checkpoint of the map.

Mario's muscle lies in his special abilities. Let's be honest here, how many Italians do you know that can shoot fire out of their hands and then put on a cape and take to the sky seconds after? That's what I thought.

This odd skill set is our main entertainment for the game. Mario can jump - a great tactic for crushing your common goomba or sending koopas flying. If you grab a fire-flower power-up, you can zap enemieis from afar. Alternatively, if you find a magic cape, you can spread your wings and fly. In the beginning, timing your jumps and reaching the end of each level will probably prove to be difficult, challenging, frustrating, and yet still fun. Veterans to the game will probably find themselves testing their speed to see how fast they can get to the end, performing skillful jumps along the way. From the first koopa in world 1-1 to the final showdown with the King Koopa himself, the primitive system will manage to captivate you and bring you a truly memorable experience.

The music of Super Mario World, while catchy, lively, and pleasant, does not always fit with the situation at hand. While it does seem a bit gloomy in the cave levels and scary in the Ghost Houses, having to hop around saws or jump over spikes does not warrant exicting, friendly music. The visuals, however, are superb for the Super Nintendo Entertainment system. Super Mario World really sent Mario into the next era of gaming. Sprites were well-crafted, giving each baddie their own special characteristics. The clean backgrounds are a piece of eye candy as you race through each level. The world map, the objects, the power-ups; everything was just superbly done. An impressive feat; not only does Super Mario World look good for a SNES game, but it was also a launch title for the system!http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p105/Icy_X-Cel/Reviews/shot_8.png
So, what happens when you get bored of the original Super Mario World? Well, there's an extensive online community that provides mods for the original game. Of course, these mods are not required to enjoy the game - Super Mario World can do that on its own - but they do bring new experiences to a superb game, and often offer a difficulty that you can't find in the original title. These mods will often have you burning through save states to make risky jumps or get past an unfair amount of enemies, and for anyone who likes the original game, trying to beat these challenges is a LOT of fun.

So, regardless of age, gender, eye color, past criminal records, or any other deciding video game factor, Super Mario World is an exquisite masterpiece that left a huge mark on video game history. It's exciting, it's original, and it's fun. Map by map, level by level, world by world, and boss by boss, great memories will be made and fun will be had. I can't recommend it enough; Super Mario World is truly a timeless classic.

Video Review

DISCLAIMER:
1. Yes. I am 15 and my voice makes that very apparent.
2. Yes. I am not very convincing at all.
3. Yes. There are a couple of phrases in this video that will probably make you say "LOL".
4. Yes. There are a few rough transitions.
5. Yes. I tried a little to hard to mimic the videos on this site.

But, I tried.

Thank you for reading my review and possibly watching my video; if you would be so kind as to step it up one notch and tell me what you thought of either of them, I would appreciate it!

Being a judge for this, i refuse to make a proper analysis on the written review just yet.

As for the video review, there are couple things I have to say.

When you talk, you sort of have this thing where you kind of leave too much room for an awkward silence. Maybe thats what you meant by the "LOL" thing, but you really just need to speak with more confidence. Confidence is the key to convincing others. If you dont speak confidently, you may find that your jokes can fall flat, and people will also get bored and tired of what you have to say. As for your physical voice, dont worry about it. I myself have a very monotone voice, and I have still have had a lot of people not mind listening to me talk. Like I said, just add confidence and liveliness, and any voice of any age can be nice and convincing.

I was never really a fan of the video supplements on the Escapist Reviews, as they dont really contribute too much to the review itself. There was very little info in the video, and I would suggest putting more next time, or even going all the way and making it a full video review.

Hoping that I will enjoy reading your review later on though, I liked the Knytt Stories one you wrote earlier.

Thanks for the words. As you mentioned, I HATE (hate hate hate hate) my physical voice, and because of that, I had trouble doing a video review. I probably spent three hours talking into my mic trying to get a sound I liked for this two minute video, but eventually I just gave up. I'm going to keep trying with these things, though; "brick walls are not there to keep us out, they give us a chance to show how badly we want something."

As for the physical review, this is not the review I will be submitting in the competition. Initially, it was going to be, but when Nuke said it would be unfair to have a video review section, I decided to go ahead and think up a new topic.

Wow. Unless you were really trying to change your voice for that review, you definitely didn't sound 15 to me. You sounded about my age, if not older.

Regardless, the supplement was very nice, and it made a good addition to the review, as it should.

BEST GAME EVAR!!! I loved this game. I always strived for 104% completion.
Me too, except there were always those damned lost world levels (I think it was Tubular that caused the most pain, whichever one had you blowing up like a balloon and floating through to the end)

Very nice review, SayAnything. Maybe you and I can show these college folk that game reviews aren't just for their kind!

If it makes you feel better, I am the same age as you, and my voice is considerably higher :( I am still as squeaky as ever.

Also, good review, I like it when really old games that I missed out on are reviewed, makes me wish I had a Super Nintendo.

That was a great review. I think I might get out my SNES and play it right now. By the way, you sound way older than 15.

Very nice, and I enjoyed your review supplement. I would make one myself, except I have no time currently, and I enjoy writing more. Also, my voice sounds rather boring. Perhaps mucking about with my recording software would do me some good(altering pitches and all), but it's just something I'm not good at.
