The story mode was kinda silly and outlandish anyway, really any time and effort invested in it would be better spent on fleshing out the multiplayer.

So even if their reasoning for it makes no sense, I'm still fine with the decision.

It's weird there's a lot of text there but all I really see here is...

Sales are low on WiiU so we're trying to boot this thing out the door as fast as we can.

Here is what I think, the reason is both budgetary and time constraints and the story mode was to give a test run to everybody who may not have played many of the games these Characters are from, So to help out new players and to reward them for getting through each level was a cut scene. With the WiiU being not as popular it stands to reason most WiiU owners are part of the Nintendo Faithful who know all the characters anyway and are likely to actively seek spoilers for the story thus the reason for the Subspace Emissary no longer exists so neither does the story.

At times like this it feels like Nintendo is run by a bunch of behind the times old men. See also: the almost total absence of online features on the Wii.
It's actually really shocking that they would be so behind the times like this. Their original console, the Famicom, had and internet connection add-on in 1988! The Super Famicom had the SatellaView. I really don't understand how they managed to get ahead of the times by over a decade; only to fall the farthest behind.

So they're dumbing down the game as a form of protest?

There's bound to be a few dozen people out there who will refuse to buy the game due to the lack of story mode, unless the previous game's story mode was stupid & pointless. Youtube is also likely to end up with a sudden spike in Nintendo cutscene uploads out of spite.

Reminds me of a Cracked article about how bafflingly low tech Japanese offices are, assuming they export all the high tech stuff they make.

As I said in the other thread, Sakurai uploaded a ton of those cutscenes to his blog months before the game even came out. So either he's lying or he's a massive hypocrite.
It's hard to call someone a hypocrite for uploading something online when he is responsible for their creation. If I draw a picture and I tell you not to post it on deviantart I'm not going to get called out for posting the image online myself, am I?

this has to be the dumbest piece of b.s. Nintendo has done lately. Screw it I was excited for the new brawl game but it's not even worth my time now.

That's got to be the dumbest excuse I've ever heard, seriously your going to cut content because some people show it on youtube oh boo hoo, taking your ball home are you Nintendo?
And here I was thinking of getting a Wii U, well if that's the sort of people controlling it then maybe I should save some cash. No wonder it's having issues getting more games with people like this behind the controls.
Those are very strong reactions for this news. Even if the reasoning was questionable, were cut scenes really that important to your enjoyment of a fighting game or were you just looking for a justification not to buy it? His weak excuse for not including cutscenes is only rivaled by your weak excuse to not buy the game. If they're taking resources out of one thing, they'll be put into good use making something else better.

They aren't even removing single player, they're just making it more like the single player in Melee. Which gameplay wise was much better in my opinion.

As much as people think Sony's investment in social media is a waste of time. I'd personally rather a company that's more open to sharing content and the Internet than Nintendo seems to fear it.

I hope for the fans that this won't be Nintendo's design philosophy for the upcoming generation; "Let's not put as much effort into this, because some people might see it for free." Might as well stop making anything then, Nintendo.

You know, I don't particularly mind a story mode being gone, but it is for the most idiotic reason I've ever heard. Nintendo need to learn how to deal with the internet.

At times like this I simply have to wonder if there is some language barrier that is making this seem more stupid than it really is. I can get behind the fact that they might want to divert more resources to making sure the core game is as rock solid as it could possibly be, and I'm quite certain that the Subspace Emissary took a tremendous amount of time and effort, but considering that all your efforts have been 'wasted' simply because cut scenes were uploaded to YouTube is remarkably baffling.

It's hard not to feel like Nintendo is completely out of touch with reality in this case, but it's also important to remember that this is just the opinion of one person at Nintendo and frankly, it feels as though Sakurai is talking out of his ass here. Whatever his opinions are, he cannot speak for the people playing the game, and whether or not they feel rewarded by seeing his cutscenes, or whether or not the game is 'ruined' if they see those cutscenes on Youtube.

Or it could just be another step in Nintendo's crusade against Youtube. I'd honestly give it 50/50 odds right now.

There was a story mode with cut scenes in Smash Bros?

Since when?
Since I sent Fox McCloud on a mission to take out multiple Kirby clones and (hopefully) one giant Kirby in Melee... LOL

OT: Well, I never really was a fan of Brawl's attempt of a "Story Mode", even though I did find myself enjoying it with my best friend... If it means we get a similar concept that Melee had, then I'm all for it...

But, then again, I can't help but wonder why Sakurai didn't just "lie" about the reason for the removal of the "Story Mode" by saying, for example, that they wanted to focus more on the core Smash Bros. gameplay and the addition of a SE-type of "Story Mode" was more of a clutch than a key necessity in this particular Smash Bros. game, considering its going to be released on both the WiiU and 3DS...

Unless this whole "YouTube" reason is that "lie" to cover up the true reason... that anyone could figure out, given the logic behind it... (Hmmm...)

That's disappointing. I really enjoyed the Subspace Emissary, I think it showed how Super Smash Bros was unique as a fighter, plus the cutscenes were really amazing.

I can sort of see where they're coming from though, if you've seen all the cutscenes online, there's really no reason to play through the story mode, but it kind of sucks for those of us who don't watch cutscenes online.

If they do make cutscenes for each new character that might be pretty cool though, maybe they'll even make cutscenes for other occasions as well, that would be pretty cool. And hopefully they'll find something to replace the story mode with as well, in any case.

Dumbest decision ever made concerning the franchise, and that includes making us play Brawl for over 10 hours to unlock Snake and Sonic. They just lost a LOT of sales.

That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard.
At least come up with a good reason like "it drains money" or "it's too much effort for not enough people liking it" not just this. It's fucking dumb.

Dear Nintendo,
Youtube is a thing and no matter how much you (inexplicably) dislike it, it's not going anywhere.
Sincerely, Seriously, what's your problem?

That excuse is dumb and I'm going to assume it was a translation error or, an incomplete statement. Everything ends up on the internet.

That being said: I'm one of those infuriating people who like Melee more than Brawl. I've spent the past month playing through Brawl and the SSE was more tedious than fun (though still fun...just...more tedious). Maybe Smash Bros For (heh) will go back to the Melee style Adventure mode.

Pretty much what everyone else in the thread has already stated.
It's a really nonsensical excuse, but Adventure Mode sucked in SSBB, so I'm all for this.
Man, I remember back in the day, everybody was excited as hell for The Subspace whatever it was. Then it turned out to be nothing but pure tedium.
This seems to be a recurring pattern with Nintendo's games.

What did you expected after nintendo claimed ownership of every single lets play that was made with one of their machines? Even for third party games that they dont really have the right to claim as their own?

Nintendo is the "nice" uncle that is only nice to you because he wants to screw your mom :p

But seriously... how much more crap are people forgiving nintendo for nostalgic reasons? Fact is Nintendo has allways treated their customers like dirt. A necesary evil to make money.. perfectly showed when they dropped their entire fanbase for a new very short lived one with the Wii

And that totaly didnt bite them in the ass with the WiiU... whats more surprising is that they still blame their own customers for every BS decision they make... some things will never change.
