I was just in a Super Smash Bros. Brawl tournament at my college. I consider myself to be pretty good at Super Smash, I can usually beat all of my friends. But today, I fought people that COMPLETLY OWNED ME. I couldn't get past the first round of the tournament. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

You should've fought for your friends. Don't give the enemy any sympathy either.

I concur.

And yeah, back in the days of Melee I had that experience. But now I'm one of the people that shock people that think they're good ;)

Don't worry, if you practice you'll catch up eventually.

The main problem that I've always had in the Super Smash Bros. games is that I never used the block button very much. As such, I never learned how to effectively use it (and I got hit a lot). I'm improving, however, mostly due to matches against professional tournament-level players. Every Friday we get together and take turns on Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I have not won yet, but I came in second twice last time. Because I'm fighting and getting beaten by better players, I'm picking up on the various tricks and tactics that they employ.

So I'd suggest finding people who can kick your ass, and improve by osmosis.

Ya, this has happened to me too, but in different competitions.

I almost won a melee tournament once, but I made the fatal mistake of trying to counter kirby's stone attack with a fire bird attack...and we were fighting on Big Blue...

Similar thing happened for me.

I was an afternoon drive jock for a radio station, and we had guitar hero set up at a booth at some trade show. I always owned all my friends, and I was doing really well at the show, and then up walked this 4'10" little brunette and she took me down many pegs.

I mention her height, because I'm 6'4", so it just seemed funnier that way.

i never competed in a tournament before, but i always wanted to, especially in my arrogant heydays of melee when i thought i was the best (my fav char is marth, i won more than anyone else back then, sometimes arrogance is founded)

i was especially gutted when there was a brawl tourney in UK, with a 40 inch home cinema system up for grabs, and all of the places that were hosting the tournament were'nt near me, and i was too poor to travel. the worst part was that i bought the game on import and had played it for an extra 2 months than most people who prob hadn't played it at all :F

I have to say ive found the online play on brawl shocking. I would barely consider myself decent at brawl, but tis a good laugh, but i have never lost a match online, anyone similar?

Wierd, I had a Brawl tournament this week at my university. I don't consider myself fantastic, so I'm not surpirsed that I didn't take the only spot in the second round. Everyone else seemed good but not godlike. My new expirence was seeing half the players going as Ike.

I think the main problem is that you're playing Brawl in the first place. Don't get me wrong, the game is pretty decent, but if you think those people are crazy, you do not want to play in a tournament with any game by Capcom/SNK. Those people are batshit insane. What's worse, is that for two years of my life I was one of them. I got carpal tunnel. Twice. Stick to Brawl if you don't want your humanity scarred.

Ive won two brawl tournaments( I use Captain Falcon) mind you they were like only 8 rounds, but I won some pretty cool stuff. The people that I played were pretty good but they used characters that they probably would have been better with if they were playing a friend, I use link with friends, and C falcon in tournaments, for some reason that just works for me.

You could be an Anime protagonist with that attitude XD

Happened to me with Melee. I was the best player in the school, something I had proven time and again outside the tournament. My best character was Pikachu.

Then the tournament rolled around, I was cocky. What happened? It was a 4-way free-for-all. I was Pikachu. There were two Marths and a Fox, which made Pikachu one of the worst possible choices to fight with. What's worse, right behind me some dickheads kept telling me to use Thunder - if you've ever played a Smash Bros. game in a semi-public area, one thing you'll notice is that everybody seems to think Thunder is a spammable move and a good Pikachu player needs nothing else. So I didn't use Thunder, partly to spite them and partly because Thunder was a stupid move 90% of the time. Then came a bit when Thunder would've won me the match. I didn't use Thunder. I died.

Also happened in a Brawl tournament at this anime convention. Now I don't actually have a Wii yet, so I'm not fantastic at Brawl and I certainly didn't have a chance of winning the tournament. I fought nevertheless for giggles and shits. I managed to make it to the second round, which pleased me muchly. Perfect execution of ROB's upsmash. Second round came along, I lost, but not before the other two players (again, it was a 4-way free-for-all) had been beaten. So, I came second in the second round, without actually having had the opportunity to play Brawl that much (I'd played it a few times). I was pretty pleased with myself.
