Super Smash Bros. For Wii U and 3DS Won't Have Cross-Platform Play

Players will be able to take characters they have customized in the 3DS version and transfer them to the Wii U version.

The Wii U and 3DS versions of Nintendo's upcoming mascot fighter: Super Smash Bros. will be different [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/124893-Super-Smash-Bros-Director-Talks-3DS-Wii-U-Version-Differences]. While the number of characters will be the same between versions, each version will feature different stages and of course, different graphics. Game Director Masahiro Sakurai stated in the past that he was working on some kind of cross-platform interaction, but unfortunately, it isn't cross-platform play.

"Since each version of the game has completely different stages, cross-platform play wouldn't work," Sakurai told Joystiq [http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/13/wii-u-and-3ds-smash-bros-will-not-have-cross-platform-play-wil/] through an interpreter. He did, however, tell us that players will be able to take characters they've customized in the 3DS version and transfer them to the Wii U version.

Sakurai wouldn't go more specifically into these what these "customizations" would be, but stated that they would not be custom costumes, as he feels they would take away from what makes each character unique. He also wants to avoid boring, repetitive tasks, such as having to collect collectibles, while developer Sora works to produce a "stress free, easy connectivity" between the two versions.

When asked if the level editor would return, Sakurai simply said "no comment."

In previous versions of Super Smash Bros., players were able to customize their character by assigning them custom control schemes and names. I'm sure veteran Smash players would welcome the opportunity just to be able to transfer their control scheme to a friend's or tournament's console via their 3DS.

As for other customizations, if it's not costumes, what else could it be? Mega Man was shown to have quite a large number of abilities, [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/124893-Super-Smash-Bros-Director-Talks-3DS-Wii-U-Version-Differences] could characters possibly have customizable ability loadouts?

Customizations, but keeping character uniqueness and not involving costume designs? That makes it not sound like a character creation thing, so I can't even guess. Maybe the abilities, maybe...

I dunno, maybe it's gonna be some kind of controllable stats thing? Maybe one player could play Mario with the power turned up, and have the mario tornado, while another could retain the FLUDD and boost speed?

I guess this is kinda good news since it means they can focus on making the Wii U version utilize its capabilities without being restricted because it has to be compatible with the 3DS version.

I hope the level editor returns though. It seems like it could be a lot better when you're actually able to draw levels rather than use blocks of various shapes. If done right I think that could be pretty cool.

I'm not really surprised. I expected something like this when they talked about the differences.
They also said the game won't be using touch screen controls for gameplay. Just for people who were worried they would force it into the game.

However, this one quote from Sakurai confuses me kinda.
?We want to balance evenly across Wii U and the 3DS versions, so there?s a balance issue there, which means you would have to avoid using touch screen controls.?
"Evenly across Wii U and the 3DS version" that does imply there is cross platform play.

>.> Can't they just let us use our 3ds as a controller? Instead of using the crappy wiimotes? That would be a great alternative. Upload your character customizations during a tournament or at a friend's house using your 3ds, then in turn use it as your controller.

If I had to guess, I'd wager what he means is that he wants the game to control the same between both versions so that you can go from playing one to playing the other and not have to worry about adjusting to different control schemes, that they'd be balanced/equal in terms of offering the same fundamental game play. I'd wager odds are very good that the Wii U version will support using the Pro controller (gotta play multi-player on the same console somehow), and since that has no touch screen, it makes it so the Wii U version can't have touch screen controls, which in turn means the 3DS one can't either if they'd want the two games to control identically.

You can use other controllers. I played SSBB with GC controller.
That's the thing though; the wii-u doesn't officially support gamecube controllers.

It likely will, however support Wii U Pro Controllers.

Problem solved. If it doesn't support these I'll eat my hat.

Come to think of it SSBU would do very well to come packaged with a Pro controller, like how Xenoblade Chronicles was packaged with a Wii Classic Controller Pro.

Shame neither game isn't cross-platform but I like that customization is possible. I dunno if any of them will top billy mays ganondorf but we shall see.

Did any Nintendo game ever support crossplay between console and handheld? I can't recall any. I'm seriously considering getting this for Megaman alone. I'm serious.

Nintendo is showing more love to Megaman than the actual company that owns him. Perhaps they would be kind enough to let Nintendo finish Legends 3 since it was supposed to be on the 3DS. :D
...I can dream no?

OT: Just like VanQ said, I don't there has been one full game released by Nintendo that allows for crossplay to be quite honest. I mean there were the games that used the handhelds as peripherals, but nothing that was the same game but on a different system. I know that Sony has been trying crossplay a lot lately.
Kinda stinks, but customization is nice. Plus I like using the Pro Controller since I can't use my mini Gamecube controller anymore.

And not a single care was given by me.
It would have been nice, but it's far too much of a hassle given how they've differentiated the two.
Just some degree of interactivity between the two is enough for me and they have that.
Waiting for some more details, though...

Customization? I'm imagining something like the capsule system in DBZ: Budokai 3. I'd be down for that, I think.

I doubt too many people are going to buy both versions anyway, so it's unlikely that it'll matter much.

Does this count?

There were several games where people on gameboys could compete with people playing with a gamecube controller on the TV. I own 2.

Euuugh.... no. Almost certainly not. In fact, I'm pretty sure his shown weapons match perfectly up with a standard Smash Bros. moveset.

A neutral: buster shots

A up: mega upper

A down: slide

A side: buster shots (walking)

A dash: top spin

---

A smash side: mega buster

A smash down: flame blast

A smash up: spark shock

---

A aerial neutral: probably buster shots

A aerial forward: flame sword

A aerial back: slash claw

A aerial down: hard knuckle

A aerial up: ??? unknown

---

B neutral: metal blades

B down: leaf shield

B side: crash bomber

B up: rush coil

Grab: super arm

Did I miss anything?
