I have finally rented and watched Superbad, after nearly a year of everyone saying that I must watch it and it?s the greatest thing since sliced pie (bread is boring). So naturally, I had high expectations for this movie and I have to say the first few minutes lived up to them?and the rest, well, not so much.

The movie takes place in Clark County, somewhere in the United states. As like most teen comedies the main premise is get drunk, get laid, have fun. Happily that?s the only resemblance to teen comedies (well, that and the excessive swearing). Apart from the first, oh, ten minutes or so there is no nudity and I liked that, it?s another reason it stands apart form all other teen comedies. Allow me to review the teen comedy formula-unpopular guys like popular girls, unpopular guys do wacky and crazy stuff to get the girls, nudity at the end; so most teen comedies end up to be a wait for nudity while having to suffer from sophomoric and slapstick humor. Not to say Superbad doesn?t have it?s fair share of this, but what comedy doesn?t.

See what I mean?

Anyway, the plot. They are invited to a girls party being held by Jules, the apple of Seth?s eye and Becca, Evan?s crush will be attending. Fogell gets himself a fake ID so he can by booze so Seth and Evan volunteer to buy the alcohol for the party thinking it will get them laid. While Fogell is buying the beer the liquor store is robbed and the idiot cops who investigate ?believe? ?McLovin? and become fast friends with him and he rides around with them all night. Seth and Evan continue their quest for booze and end up at a party where they narrowly escape getting killed and steal some alcoholic beverages from said party, get hit by the two cops, run, make it to the party, where it turns out the girls like them back. Evan could have gotten ?laid? but decides not to because him and Becca are drunk and Jules doesn?t drink and Seth is drunk. Then they are at the mall the next day where they run into the girls and go their separate ways (Seth with Jules, Evan with Becca). They whole time there is a sub plot about Evan and Seth going to different colleges.

apperently when a car is chargin you, you're supposed to lay low (they have poor eye sight)

The first few minutes of the movie, Seth (that fat one) is talking to Evan (the normal looking one) about what porn site to subscribe to and then hit?s on Evan?s mom. They then proceed to school, talk about getting laid and whatnot and it?s the funniest part of the movie. Then Fogell (the nerdy one, also known as McLovin) is introduced; he?s not the reason the movie went down from there, in fact he?s the best part of the movie. Fogell is the ?outsider? in the group and I say that because I don?t know what other word to describe him with-he?s their friend but they don?t like him that much. When Michael Cera (Seth) was auditioning they said he was hilarious and perfect but not once did I laugh at him, he stutters and when he speaks he sounds nervous so his dialogue is broken, and well, I can?t really describe it, it?s sort of like he?s trying to make it up as he goes so he repeats himself and, um ok, you know in a sitcom when someone is telling a lie? Yeah, it?s like that and they did this on purpose and it?s intolerable, I left the room more then once while he was talking because I just couldn?t take it. Fogell however, is gold through and through. He is excessively nerdy and white but he sometimes talks like a gangster and shoots a gun like one and while this is nothing we haven?t seem before this time it?s actually funny.

I like to think I know a good movie when I see one, and when I do I will watch it over and over again. A good movie should have something gamers call ?replay value?. Superbad ahs this. It may not be that funny save Fogell after the first few minutes, but I found myself enjoying it. I watched it a few more times since my initial viewing. So, it may not live up to the hype but it?s still a funny movie, and one enjoyed. Superbad may differentiate itself from the pack of teen movies, but it never fully cuts the cord. You can say it?s not a teen comedy, but yes, yes it is, at heart it is a teen comedy and no matter how much it tries to hide this fact it just can?t. Rent it, it?s a funny, enjoyable movie but it just doesn?t live up to the hype.

Excellent use of photos. This movie deserves a special award for making the funniest dick joke of all time.

Seriously, the Tiananmen Square dick? That still cracks me up.

you totally missed the cops, they were the best part of the movie, Seth and Evan, his whiny Shinji-esque lackey were ok but those cops are pure comedy gold

and yes the dick drawings were good

I thought the movie was gold and any movie where Jonah Hill gets "perioded" on is looking at a positive review from me.

that's one of the reasons I didn't like it.

They cops were funny but the scenes with them in it felt like scenes from "the office".

Good review. I love this movie myself. The dialogue and relationship between Seth and Evan is just so natural (and hilarious), it reminds me of my high school days. And sorry, cleverlymadeup, but I have to disagree - I thought the cops were the worst part of the whole movie.

The problem with this review is that you basically give away the entire movie. You say everything that happens, including the conclusion. I've already seen the movie, and as such, I've already formed my own opinions. You really should be focusing your reviews to target the people who want to know more about the movie before deciding if they want to see it, but in this case, anybody in that position might be upset that you've given everything away. What we have left is a decent review with no intended audience.

everybody and their mums has seen this movie anyway, I have just been living under a rock for the past year so it doesn't really matter and it's not like I told every joke in the film, so people still have a reason to see it and for the love of god who didn't see the ending coming? of course they're going to hook up with the girls thats how all teen comedies end.

I really didn't laugh more than once or twice during this movie, but then again, I was a videogame/DnD playing geek in High School who knew he wasn't gonna get laid until college and didn't like the taste of booze anyway.

it read more like a synopsis rather than a review.

i also think your perspective is a bit off, since you are thinking of this as another hollywood attempt at a teen movie. i truth, what makes this film notable is that it's the Apatow crew's attempt at a teen comedy.

there's no jocks, no highschool eliticism, no shy "under your nose" femal friend. it's 3 dudes that exist in their own bubble (like most of us did) away from the highschool bullshit. it's about the social outsiders (not losers, nerds, or slackers) who finally want to jump inside just once before they go to college.

Ho ho ho! Dick jokes and juvenile, disgusting humor for an hour and a half! Now that is what I call real inventive comedy! Let's go make more films!

Ho ho ho!

but they are indifferent to it. it doesn't torment them throughout the film motivating them to overcome anything. sure, there's 1 long haired white trash kid who spits on him, but that doesn't play into any jock/rich kid cliches. it's just some asshole at the school.

That's what "bullying" in Highschool was like for me, it was like one or two jackasses who were just that... individual jackasses.

but we're talking about a movie. and the movie cliche poses the bully as either a primary or secondary antagonist whom the character has to confront. that doesn't happen in Superbad. the bully character is viewed as a juvenile annoyance and is later dealt with in a peripherary fashion by a supporting character. that scene was for the joy of the audience and had nothing to do with the narrative.
