Whedon brought Buffy Summers to the screen in 1997. And this is what a female led superhero/woman-with-powers TV show looks like eighteen years later? Wow, something went wrong in the meantime...

I suppose there's certainly room for The Devil Wears Prada with powers, but to me it looks like a fumbled step back from Buffy. Then again, it could just be a terribly edited trailer, which doesn't do the show justice. Only time [and ratings] will tell.

Is that article satire, or something? The Watchers were, in part, a commentary on negative male power. And the writer cites this as "problematic"? Methinks she needs to watch the show again before writing a critique.

Kinda heart warming. I like it. I'm gunna watch and hope for the best.

Not sure how often they're going to update her costume though. Looks nothing like the promo pic initially.

Welcome to the wonderful world of modern feminism. You have a lot to learn, young one. Like, for example, that these people are fucking crazy.

You don't see any problem with the vanilla chickflick treatment? It really does look like the Black Widow SNL skit. As I said, eighteen years ago we had a female led superhero series in the shape of Buffy - Supergirl circa 2015 doesn't seem like progress.

I suppose there's a case to be made for having a smaltzy Devil Wears Prada treatment, but Supergirl's trailer seems like an awful and hackneyed approach. I mean, seriously, the lines about the word "girl"? Sheesh.

Well, I've been a feminist since the late '90's, and I'm not sure I'd identify that article as being particularly reflective of modern feminism; people of any ideological/political stripe can be plain ol' bad writers and flawed thinkers.

You should read more Jezebel, Feministing, marysue or watch Feminist Frequency then because you obviously haven't been keeping up with modern feminism and its most popular representatives. Finding excuses to whine about popular entertainment because it was created by males (OH NO IT'S THE PATRIARCHY!) is what these people do best. Or you could visit tumblr but I wouldn't wish that even to my worst enemies.

The first half of that trailer gives me bad Catwoman vibes. Doesn't bode well.
Oh well, doesn't take much to be better than the first Supergirl at any rate.

Wait, it's going to be a TV show?
Colour my interest in the negatives.

Why are all these random people able to make super hero costumers with micro detail weaves and other incredibly fancy elements?

I started noticing that with the Spiderman movies, where he managed to get a fancy web pattern integrated into the material itself, and it's only extrapolated from there. At least Batman has the money and can subcontract material suppliers.

As for the show itself, looks alright, but not my cup of tea. And the "go make me some coffee" just felt cringingly out of place. "I don't trust aliens to fight for us, but I will trust them enough to get things I plan to ingest, so I trust them enough to not poison me after being a colossal prick".

Just came off like the obligatory sexist sidehand that doesn't really make any sense.

They've checked all points on the SJW series list.

Welcome to Tumblr: Superhero Edition
Wow, MRA bingo all in one post! man no one will beat that!

I feel like this is the studios going after the 20 something gen Y girls who got dragged to the marvel movies by their boyfriends and kinda sorta liked them maybe a bit.

I'm digging the micro mini though. I can't help but think that the only place a skirt that short is appropriate these days is in rap videos so maybe it all balances out.

Well, here's a few things to consider.
Buffy didn't seem to live much of a double life, IIRC. Never really seen her in a disguise. It's sorta apples and oranges here.
2 She's essentially a female superman with a different outlook on life. We'll get a different point of view, but she's learned her secret identity skills from Superman, so of course her cover is going to be Clark Kent-ish. She probably uses similar disguise glasses as him, too, which supposedly add a slight illusion. In the comics she works in a different publication than the planet, IIRC, too.

It takes all kinds to make the world go 'round and I'm seeing a diverse set of personalities among the cast.

"Girl" has some negative impact among adults in general. It's about time someone put it out there that it doesn't have to be negative.

Progress doesn't always some in a nearly flawless package. Supergirl not always being super makes her more relate-able IMO.

Girl, like boy, assumes immaturity and there's nothing wrong with that, enough with the politically correct crap even here. That 60 year old bitchy boss was certainly not a "girl", that was just the show's desperate attempt to explain the name.

My assumption was that when the character was created Supergirl was supposed to be pretty young (18-20 yo) and a quick look at wikipedia confirmed that, the first time the character was created she was 16 years old.

Yeah, but what about Power Girl? :p

I think the dialogue they had about Girl was meant to also help make people comfortable with her being super girl, too. Layers of reasons, maybe. Honestly, they couldn't just change the name of the character like that anyhow. Well, they could, but they'd lose something with it.

I'm not sure if I suppose to laugh with the teaser or at the teaser... I'm going to say the formal since outside of the boss's reason for the "SuperGirl" title, the lesbian throw-away line, and the predictable "It's not a Man" sequence over the same modern pop music to advertise something fun for the female audience nowadays, it's wasn't that bad...
Outside of that, I'll still watch it... Probably be worth watching the first 2 hours of the series... Hopefully, not everything in that first look trailer's going to be in it otherwise, I'm calling a [superheroing] montage sequence...
