Superman Movie Finds its Lois Lane, Could Soon Have its Villain

The new Superman casting has debunked one rumor about the movie, but there's plenty more waiting in the wings.

Zack Snyder's Superman movie has found its Lois Lane, despite rumors [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/107561-Rumor-Lois-Lane-Wont-Be-In-New-Superman-Film ] from early last month which suggested that she wouldn't be appearing in the film at all. What's more, the chances that Lord of the Rings star Viggo Mortensen - who is apparently [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/108104-Superman-Director-Wants-Aragorn-to-Be-His-Villain] Snyder's first pick for the evil General Zod - will appear in the movie, are looking up.

Enchanted star Amy Adams will star alongside Henry Cavill as Superman's main squeeze, Lois Lane. In a statement, Snyder called Adams one of the most versatile film actors in Hollywood today, and said that she had all the qualities to play the smart, funny, and ambitious Daily Planet reporter. Adams has also appeared in movies like The Fighter and Doubt, and episodes of TV shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Office, and rather appropriately, Smallville.

Mortensen, on the other hand, isn't officially attached to the movie - he's not even in talks yet - but one of the main obstacles that would have stood in his way if he was interested has now been removed. Mortensen was in talks for Universal's upcoming Snow White movie, but these talks apparently fell apart after the actor wanted more money than the studio was willing to pay. Had Mortensen appeared in the movie, it would have made it difficult for him to appear in Superman, but now that he's walked away, he's free to be a maniacal Kryptonian if he was so inclined.

Me and the missus are sold on Amy Adams alone.

We love just about everything we've seen her in.

I like everything about this movie so far. Snyder guarantees more action and a movie that will work visually. Nolan brings credibility to the project and the promise that the script will be alright. Costner and Lane bring gravitas to their roles as Clark´s parents. Cavill is a good choice to portray Superman:not yet a superstar, but with enough acting experience to give fans confidence about his portrayal. Amy Adams is an Academy Award nominee, she has the right look and the acting chops to play Lois. It will probably end up being a lot better than Superman Returns (and i enjoyed that film).

Now all we need is a good villain. Mortensen as Zod is cool. And i can already imagine a few good fight scenes :)

Hmmm, I'd have to see her in costume. Honestly I don't think she works for the character, especially seeing as she's a blonde. If they dye her hair or whatever that might help, which is of course why I think they need to show her in costume before I can make any final desicians.

For me it's a situation a lot like having Heimdall or The Kingpin played by black guys in movies, if they are going to do movies based on comic characters they should find people who look like the characters, or come close to it. Simply being pretty isn't all there is to Lois, however coloration of the hair might be changable, it all depends on whether darker hair works forher, or is going to be a really obvious and "WTF" dye job like it is for some girls. He skin tone makes me wonder about that.

As odd as this sounds I think Teri Hatcher looked the most like I'd expect the character to look back when she did "Lois and Clark" even if I didn't much care for the show itself. She's too old to play the role at the moment (and committed to the very successful "Desperate Housewives" anyway).

While making a decent amount of money, what I think is sort of holding back comic book inspired movies from their full potential is simply that I think the writers and directors want to take too many liberties for various reasons. More often than not it seems to fail. I'm not just looking at this, but also some of the desicians made with "Thor", "Daredevil", and of course the recent "Wonder Woman" costume.

To put things into perspective, given the way they wrote the role I think "Daredevil" would actually have been improved if they had picked someone like say "Stone Cold" Steve Austin to play the role, you didn't need to be a great actor, and the guy could do the choreography. Of course the perfect person for the role isn't in shape to do it, the old pro-wrestler "King Kong Bundy" pretty much WAS The Kingpin in real life, at least physically.

Simply put comics are a visual medium, and I think to do things right they need to find people who look the part first, and try and teach them to act, and this is a paticularly viable technique when working with supporting characters.

While hardly a pro-wrestling fan, I think such leagues are a gold mine of talent for these kinds of movies as the people involved have the super-heroic builds, and also do fight choreography for a living. Granted the wrasslin isn't what you'd nessicarly expect for the fight scenes, but they know and practice enough to adapt, and a decent number of them also practice real fighting techniques above and beyond what they use to perform, Brock Lesner being a good example of this, and why there are others who have talked about wanting to
come out to try and fight in the UFC or whatever. What's more, while not great actors, the kind of bombastic stuff they do for pro-wrestling actually works for a lot of the super-hero stuff. See, a criticism of a lot of it is that "this guy sounds like a comic book villain, not a tournament fighter" well guess what... when it comes to playing a comic book villain that would probably work pretty well for a lot of characters.

Or simply put, I'm on the opposite side of things from guys like Moviebob it seems (which happens with some frequency). I think the various movies created by the WWE where wrestlers act suffer from the problem of being badly constructed to begin with, and I'd imagine a lot of the issues also revolve around them remaining salable to the general audience (you don't want to freak people out about Cain too badly for example, or convince people they don't want their kids to see him perform anymore), and also worries about injuries since if someone like a John Cena gets hurt doing a movie, that means he can't wrestle, and the movie is just a sideline, not what everyone makes the majority of their money off of.

That's my thoughts at any rate.

I know a lot of people will probably freak out at me saying saying so, but I honestly think Meagan Fox looks more like Lois Lane than Amy Adams does. Amy Adams is a better actress, but then again for playing Lois Lane who is a supporting character in a movie about Superman I think she could pull it off. Her biggest disadvantage is that I think she's a little TOO young in the same way that I think Teri Hatcher is a little too old to reprise the role. Amy Adams being in her mid 30s is about right (she was born a year before me, I'm 35 so she's 36) because Lois is supposed to be a seasoned reporter who has an entire career behind her, as opposed to a newbie "sex kitten" type. The newbie cub reporter schtick has always been Jimmy Olson. Speaking of which, given the option I'd probably cast the kid who played Ron Weasly from the "Harry Potter" movies as Jimmy, he kind of looks the part and can act pretty well. Of course the way he looked in the last movie makes me think he might have a bit of a drug problem for some reason. Of course I think that of a lot of actors nowadays, even guys I really like, or example Nathan Fillion has these huge bags under his eyes in "Castle" that go beyond what I think simple aging could account for.

Well, Zod had a hard time finding someone to shine his shoes.

Bleah, get away from General Zod.

How about Darkseid! Now, that'd be an exciting movie villian.
While I agree with this sentiment, if Mortensen were to play Zod (or any Superman villain, even Toyman), then that would be enough to get me into the theater, despite my reservations about the movie.

I could've sworn, though, that Snyder shot down the idea of Zod appearing in the movie.

I am pretty sure that I heard recently Mortensen was out and Michael Shannon (another great actor and Academy Award nominee) was going to be taking over the role.

OT: I am fine with Amy Adams as Lois Lane, I have no real connections to superman and she is a good actor.

HUGE PICTURE IS HUGE!

OT: Works for me, it will be funny to see Viggo in a movie I will watch. But since Amy Adams will be in this you might as well forgive Snyder for SuckerPunch.

If you aren't paying attention when reading the release, you'd think they cast Viggo Mortensen as Lois Lane... I'd see that!

There is so much about this post I disagree with, particularly your points about Amy Adams and her ability to play Lois Lane, but this was when I really tuned out.
