Oh good. Superman is, of course, the one dc character in desperate need of a buff. He's so Under Powered right now after all. e_e
To be honest, he actually is. "Superman" is supposed to be an iconic power house, one of the strongest characters anywhere, and is treated that way. However over the years, especially in the comics, he's been second or third rate, I mean there are plenty of characters running around that are as strong as he is. Darkseid, Lobo, Mongul, etc... and plenty of opponents with attacks that can hurt him (sometimes a lot) without even needing to resort to Kryptonite. Flying through space isn't all that unique anymore, and really energy projection is one of the most common powers
there is nowadays. Superman losing fights, being hurt, or having his strength matched is so common that I almost expect it to the point where Superman seems like the "Worf" of DC nowadays. I'm also just talking about his direct powers here, not how easy it is to outmaneuver with some of the fancier stuff. In the current environment he's just not what Superman is supposed to be, and what's more his caution and attitudes lose something when there are so many characters on his level that are so reckless and don't seem to find any real drawback to it. It makes Superman seem like a pussy, and really that wasn't what he was supposed to be like (all criticisms aside).
From the way it sounds to me they are pretty much copying Apollo who was Superman's "Wildstorm" equivalent who heavily played up the solar aspect. Apollo had so much power he was able to "sterilize the moon" on request. I'm guessing the idea is to fold a solar/light based power set into Superman along with the physical one. I'd also expect shortly he's going to evolve beyond vulnerability to Kryptonite, as originally that existed to deal with a character who was otherwise invincible. Given that DC is now full of so many peers for this guy, including Kryptonians with his own power set who for all intents and purposes are immune, it becomes increasingly silly.
I mean honestly, when it seems people now do stories in one media form or another where Batman kicks his butt yet again, and it's sold convincingly, it's pretty obvious Supes needs some help, since it stopped seeming so impressive. I mean really, it seems like everyone kicks his butt nowadays. I can't wait for Marvin from the old "Superfriends" cartoon to get his turn in the current status quo.
Not to mention that most of his Wildstorm equivilents are now IN DC comics....
