Surgery

So, since I'm going in for a tonsillectomy in ten hours, I'm a little on the nervous side. I've decided that the best way to cure this would be to ask you all about it.

How about it, my fellow Escapists? Have you had any surgeries in the past? What were they like?

I've gone in to have an ingrown toenail removed twice. It was only local anaesthesia though. After those times I just decided to do it myself.

It's just oral surgery... I wouldn't be too concerned. I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed at once, but that's the most serious surgery (if you can even call it that) I've ever had. I was knocked the fuck out but I did wake up as they were finishing the stitches, but even that wasn't so bad.

The only advice I would give you is to follow the doctor's instructions after the surgery exactly; getting an infection after surgery sucks, so doctor's orders will minimize the chances of infection.

I had my wisdom teeth taken out when I was 15. I was drugged for hours, and I remember them sawing out a part of my jaw so they could yank them out with pliers, and...
I'm probably not helping.
As long as you don't freak out while they're working, it should be fine. And you get ice cream.
Ice cream is good.

I had laser surgery when I was... four, or something like that, on a birth mark on the left side of my face (it was a HUGE birth mark, too). Holy fuck, did that hurt (I was awake during the procedure).

Have had 3 eye surgeries to correct a squint in my vision, and as such, I no longer wear glasses, and haven't since the second half of year 3.

Have had 4 teeth extracted for braces (not my wisdom teeth, though).

And, more recently, had a bilateral wedge resection for double ingrown toenails.

The thing close to one is when I had to have my wisdom teeth taken out. I had problems form the anesthesia for at least a few months after that. I refuse to ever do anything that involves using that to put me to sleep ever again.

The only surgeries I've had were to remove my wisdom teeth and to remove a pilonidal cyst (I highly recommend NOT looking that up, BTW). I walked out of them the same day. No one keeps me in a hospital overnight.

Yeah, I thought they had to put you to sleep for that. Like, I thought it was illegal to not do it that way.

Having your tonsils out is a pretty big operation, bigger than they make out. (My GP would not let me have mine out because of the risk, over the benefits, even though my tonsils are HUGE and really irritate me). But it's also a pretty routine operation. If I ever had mine out, I'd beg to keep them in a jar. :-D

I had to find a private dentist who would sedate me. I hate them, NHS don't fund sedation sadly... anyway, I'm totally awake while I have oral surgery, but it's like I'm pissed off my face, it's wonderful, can't feel a thing. Remember everything... I remember spitting blood at a nurse who was telling me to swallow it, pretending it was water. Lying cow, she got her apron all bloody ^_^

My mom had her tonsils and her adnoids removed and she had tubes put in her ears when she was younger, all at the same time. She said it was awesome. She got to be out of school for like a month, everone was super nice to her, and when she got back they'd prepared a surprise for her.

Point being, don't focus on the surgery, think of the perks

Yeah, I thought they had to put you to sleep for that. Like, I thought it was illegal to not do it that way.

Maybe it is... I don't know, but I remember most, if not all of the surgery pretty clearly. I... won't go into details, for risk of making OP unnecessarily nervous. I live in Canada though, maybe that's different.

I have had about 20 surgeries in my lifetime. Most of which were on my ears for replacing tubes. The others were a tonsillectomy and for a deviated septum ((i wouldn't recommend the latter))

I can give you advice on the recovery process. It will be a two week time span the first of which will have some discomfort as you are first dealing with the pain. This will subside however until the end of the first week when some of the scabbing wears off. Just be aware you wont be able to have any drinks with citric acid in them and that you'll need to eat very soft foods.

Don't eat the hospital jello too fast. It might seem like you're hungry, but don't push it.
And for god's sake, when they say you have 10 minutes to urinate naturally (or else) they mean it!

i had my tonsils taken out when I was 10, it was the simplest medical procedure ever done(for me)

They put me on the table, they put the mask on me, I fell asleep.
Within 3 or 4 seconds (to me) I woke up in the ICU on a nice comfy bed with a severe sore throat.

the only thing you have to worry about is the sore throat, nothing else.
(you might be a little nauseous from the pain meds)

You'll be fine man, don't sweat it.

I've had a probably more than a dozen surgeries ranging from wisdom teeth pulled to skin graphs. If they put you under what'll happen is you'll feel like you're hearing everything from far away, kinda like if you've ever stuck just your ears underwater but kept your eyes and nose on the surface and then the next thing you'll know is there are bright lights and a nurse is asking you if you're okay. Your head will be fuzzy and there'll be a dull ache where your tonsils used to be. Your family should be in shortly to visit. Don't panic, these are doctors who've studied for something like eight years in med school and done countless procedures and tonsillectomies are pretty common. Best of luck.
