I'm out looking for a survival horror game, preferably for the PS3. I have played the Silent Hill games (and enjoyed them quite a lot), and the Resident Evil games (which, in my opinion, became too action-oriented after the first three outings).

To further explain my taste in survival horror games, these are some of the other titles I've played and liked:

Project Zero 3: The tormented
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
Darkness Within 2: The Dark Lineage

and, as I mentioned earlier:

Resident Evil (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5)
Silent Hill (1, 2, 3, The Room, Shattered Memories)

In addition to these, I've played through Dead Space. The focus on action was not exactly to my liking.

I also saw a playthrough of Deadly Premonition for the Xbo360, and was pleasantly surprised by the focus on the story.

I'm hoping to get some advice on which games to look for from you here on the escapist.

Thanks in advance!

If you have a somewhat decent computer, you should definitely play Amnesia: The Dark Descent and the Penumbra games.

Well you seem to have gotten most of the good Survival Horror games covered. But i do have one to add and that is Nightmare Creatures for PSOne.

Not for the PS3, but for the PS2, I'd heartily suggest Echo Night: Beyond. Best survival horror game I've ever played on any platform, and you can easily find it new for under 10 bucks these days.

Have you played the Resident Evil Remake and 0 on the Gamecube? Other than that, I'm not too sure of other survival horror games.

I'm not sure that my computer (laptop) meets the requirements for Amnesia, unfortunatley... although I'd really like to try that game.

Nightmare Creatures! I knew I had forgotten something from the list. I've actually played that one, but never finished it...

And of course the alone in the dark series... Damn, my memory is getting bad here...

Ah, I had completely forgotten about Echo Night: Beyond. Thanks for that. Will look around for it.

Well, the Penumbra games are made by the same people, and I'm pretty sure the system requirements are lower. I dunno.

Good game, but still, VERY action oriented.

You want to play the scariest game of all time?

World of Warcraft, it's scary how much time this game sucks up! *Badam Tisch*

I am working on my comedy routine! :D

lol You had me excited for a moment, Vivi.

Yep, there are several, several, things that don't work all that well in the game. The many nods to Twin Peaks, along with a really surprising conclusion, and the quirky characters, redeemed the game in my opinion.

The gameplay, and the otherwordly episodes, seemingly leave a lot to wish for...

I don't know if it's on PS3, but Condemned:Criminal Origins was the best survival horror game I've ever played. The sequel not so much :(

There aren´t many S.Horror games on PS3, the only ones I can think of (besides s.hill homecoming) is Siren: blood curse and Alone in the dark: Inferno... but they both suck.
If you have a dreamcast you should definitely get D2 (highly recommended), Illbleed (highly recommended) The ring, Carrier, Blue Stinger and Dino Crisis (or the PS1 version) If you have a PS2 try to look for fatal frame 1 and 2 (project zero) rule of rose, haunted grounds, Clock tower 3 and maybe, just maybe, the Siren saga. and for the PS1: Parasite Eve, Overblood, Hellnight and Galerians.

There haven´t been too many survival horror games lately, I had high hopes on ¨The calling¨ for the Wii, but It was pretty weak, Fatal frame 4 looks great but It never came overseas.

Is that the one about the person and it takes place on a space station or something? I always loved the idea of horror in space. Not like you can run around too much with it being in space and all.

Thanks for the link. I was thinking about purchasing Galerians: Ash for the PS2, but I must admit that a couple of bad reviews have kept me from getting it already.

As for Siren: Blood Curse... That is the title I'm thinking about, for the PS3... But, it hasn't gotten any spectacular reviews...

Honestly, the scariest game I've played in a long time has been Amnesia: The Dark Descent. I know it was recommended to you already, but you really should try it out if you can. It is straight up terrifying. I've been playing through it while a friend watches, and we've both ended up flipping out at certain parts. So scary. Definitely a must-have for any survival horror afficionado. Same goes for the Penumbra games by the same developer, but Amnesia takes everything a step further by not giving you weapons. Screw fighting monsters; just run the hell away!

Otherwise, I'd suggest checking out the original F.E.A.R.. It's a fair bit better than the sequel, though it is a bit heavy on the action side. Still, there are plenty of scary moments in that one as well.

Oh, I nearly forgot! Other than Amnesia, the scariest game I've ever played is System Shock 2. Your computer should be able to handle it, as it was released in '99, if memory serves. It was made by the same guys who did BioShock, but is a fair sight better at creating a terrifying atmosphere and leaving you with a huge challenge on your hands. Ammo conservation, finding proper tactics, and dealing with scary enemies all while giving you the opportunity to develop your character like an RPG. How is that not great?

If you haven't done so yet you need to play the Fatal Frame series. I'd probably put them above even the Silent Hills for pure scare and atmosphere factor. Also, unlike the RE games, they definite;y aren't action games pretending to be survival horror.

The Condemned games. Condemned 1 is all-around better (A.K.A. Scarier) than the sequel, but Condemned 2 has vastly improved combat but it loses all sense of subtlety around level 2 and it basically turns into a terrible FPS in the last few hours.

A:DD is also a good choice, as previously mentioned, it is one of the most frightening games I've ever played. I do not recommend the Penumbra games however, they aren't frightening to me at all.

I suggest Killing Floor, as long as you play it before they get rid of their Christmas event, because there is nothing quite like shooting a giant, snarling ginger bread man with a spike for an arm in the face! It's not exactly scary, though, unless you are prone to getting nightmares of afore mentioned ginger bread men.

For a survival horror which focuses a lot more on the 'horror' aspect, definitely get Amnesia: Dark Descent and the first FEAR game.
