What do you do in in-game survival situations? Do you panic and go apeshit? Do you think rationally and find useful weapons/locations/things that ensure higher chances of survival? Do you just find a way out of fighting, and run?

In my personal experience, I try to map out possible areas of confrontation, the hot-spot of the current level or place, and then gather what is needed to fully abuse what I have learned. For example, say just in a small Halo 3 map, I check out where the close quarters is happening, find out where/how it's moving, find appropriate weapons like say a rocket launcher for cluster fucks or a shot gun for 1 on 1's, and then enter at appropriate times of confusion and mayhem.

Give me as much as you can - I'd like to see what others would do.

I run. Mirror's Edge is my favorite game.

I don't panic, I don't swing wildly. I keep tabs at all times on my exits, and if I'm outclassed, I run for it.

Then I break a baseball bat over their face when they round the corner (if the game allows it). Then I run away again, until I A) lose the enemy, B) break its face with enough baseball bats, or C) find a better weapon that allows for easy dispatch.

The exception is in defensive battles or escort quests, in which I grab my best weapon and grit my teeth.

I find things that I deem useful, then I stay and fight. I'll also have found a way out by that point, just in case I get overwhelmed.

I like being excessively theatrical about the whole thing - I somehow have a tendency to survive as a result...

I collect any and all ammo i can find. Then i find the nearest cover spot and carefully take shots at the enemy.

My example shall be a Survival game, L4D2.

I will pick a weapon I feel would be useful, think of what to do, then go mad until the situation calls for a necessary plan.

I will usually stick with someone , but may ditch said partner to help someone else, followed by either returning to my partner or sticking with a new one, Depending on how close my old partner is to a different player (Buddy system).

I will save Ammo with some weapons, and waste it with others (All depending on the weapon). I will swap weapons out when ammo runs low, rather than waiting for more ammo for the weapon (No long-term plan for weaponry).

I prefer to move as fast as possible, but will stay and fight as long as I deem necessary (Basically until I feel it's safe to run again).

I tend to switch between tactics on the fly, so this is the best I can come up with for an explanation, although I will give an option #2.
Post #2: Avoid direct conflict, provide fire either indirectly or from a distance.

First thing first is I try to access the scenario. Fight if I have to, avoid direct confrontations if I can. I try to use the environment as much as I can, ambush spots, defensible terrain, hazards, etc. This goes for in game and in RL. I'm a hyper-paranoid person in any public setting and I find myself constantly checking for escape routes, potential ambush zones, and avenues for defense. But, as I said, I'm paranoid, not that someone's out to get me, just that people look for easy targets and I don't aim to be one.

I fight as hard as i can, with my best weapons. I would rather use rare ammo (if an FPS) than die and start over (plus it give me an excuse to use my doomsday weapons). If there is no hope, then i try to run/hide... sometimes if im feeling sneaky, I hide somewhere and set up traps or ambushes to pick them off one by one.

L4D2 is my game for survival.
Give me the high-powered sniper rifle and a melee weapon. People will flame you for being "retarded", but it is they who participate in the Special Olympics!
I single-handedly saved a teammate from across the map with a well-placed headshot on a Smoker and proceeded in shooting any flesh-eater coming from behind. And it was the map with the storm that makes visibility near impossible.
Any situation can be diffused with this combo.
