DMC is a spectacle fighter. Rebellion is really the only sword you get but that is the weapon you will probably use the most. It is still a good game no matter what the butthurt fanboys say.
Problem is DMC's combat while ok at best is slow. And I mean 30fps slooooooooooooooooooooooooow compared to 3 and 4s graphically stunning lightning fast 60fps. So if someone is looking for fast paced and good combat I suggest playing the classic Devil May Cry's specifically 3 and 4.

Chivalry I just recently got the hang of and loved every second of.

Also Dark Souls has the best sword play I've played in a long time. One of those sink your teeth in kind of combat systems.

I can recommend Dark messiah of might and magic, it's fun, fast paced and the combat is brutal and deadly based around physics environmental traps (you can kick people of ledges, into spikes, fires etc.)

Other than that there's bladeless, a nice flash based dueling game.

http://kidevil.com/bladeless/

it has simple controls but it's really engaging.

Also, Mount and Blade has pretty good mechanics, even though the animation and graphics quality is nothing spectacular. (you can block with your sword as you wind up for a slash, for example, it counts the speed at which the weapon is moving, and has pretty good armor and weapon list to choose from)

pretty much any suggestion I had has already been said. I still and rather fond of fable tlc if your up for playing an older game, just cleaving though enemies and timing your blocks perfectly is just so satisfying even today.

Try 'Dark Messiah: Of Might and Magic'. It has excellent melee combat; swords, daggers, staves - it's great.

since the beginning of the 3D era im waiting for a game with a real block and hit detection.
a parry shouldnt be a generic animation, it should look like your really blocking that incoming blow.
and a hit should be more than a generic blood splatter.

I know Im dreaming ;)

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare

Great and fun game. Probably on sale on GOG or green man (or steam in a few days).

This is going to sound crazy, but I would recommend Zelda: Skyward Sword. Yes it's purely motion control, but it really felt like 1 to 1 sword control, and besides the occasional hiccup, you have to recognize patterns and attack and defend when necessary. It's not the best Zelda game for me personally, but the combat was fresh and exciting even if I prefer the traditional 3D Zelda combat controls.

I'm throwing my vote in with Dark Souls and Demon's Souls, they're among my favorite games and the combat is excellent in them. Seeing some other people recommending Chivalry I feel like I should mention that I've had some horrible lag issues with the game in part due to how terribly optimized it is, but I know some people who love it so there is that.

Soul Calibur any will do but the original is best. It may not be realistic as its a game but its fun as hell and the weapons all behave differently.

Other than that maybe Metal Gear Rising Revengeance. I havent played it yet but from all accounts the sword combat is very satisfying.

maybe on console it is only 30 fps, but on pc that is a different story. I never felt it all that slow.

Gonna go with the Chivalry people. If you don't mind multiplayer only and quick and easy to learn gameplay then that game is for you. Not super realistic but it's fun enough for few hours of play.

Still that would mean having a to get a whole PC just to play the better version of DmC, when you can just have the old games that seem to run on some sort of old yet stylish 60fps Capcom sorcery on a cheaper to obtain gaming console.

Also did I forget to mention how orgasmic Devil May Cry 4 PC gameplay is at 1680x1050, highest available settings and 8xAA?

Just... GG Ninja Theory.
