I don't understand why people buy swords. It has no real practical use in today's world.
Because shooting someone in the face is nowhere near as satisfying as stabbing them in the crotch.
That's what knives are for.
Yees but knives can be so short you might accidentally touch there crotch. Swords are often too long for such a thing to occur.

$1500

No joke. Plus extra for the grinder to sharpen it.
That is, 1500 if you want a high-quality battle-ready replica.
Like $100 if you want a crappy stainless steel glorified butter knife.

What if you use a harpoon gun?
Then you stab them in the crotch first and use it to easily mount your trophey on the wall afterwards.

You can't use a harpoon gun because when you shoot said crotch people will feel compelled to call you a " Moby Dick " and thats no fun :-(

I hope you aren't flying there. Imagine trying to explain having a sword to airport security?
If it isn't on a carry on it is fine, or should be... if it isn't we are just going to mail it back here... Went I was in Mexico, I bought a knife back with me... they even opened up the suitcase and searched around it and didn't fine the knife... Really pathetic considering that it was just laying in there under a shirt...

I'm going to San Fransisco at the end of the month on vacation and my mom said that we have to go to China Town, so I was thinking of buying a sword there... Anyone know how much I should save up to get a decent one?
You can get swords there for as little as $20. Problem is, just about everything you find there will be crap. Generally speaking, you have the cheap import swords (such as those in Chinatowns across America for anywhere from $20-$100), Museum Replicas type stuff for anywhere from $100-$1000, and REAL good stuff that is generally anywhere above $1000.

If you want a really nice one, you'd better save up some cash. It also might be a good idea to check to see if they have swords for sale in the first place.

Yeah, I'm no expert, but I was under the impression that battle quality swords were worth THOUSANDS (note the plural) of dollars. If it doesn't have that kind of pricetag it's basically melted down rebar poored into a mold. I wait to be corrected.

Yeah well as long as it isn't in easy reach they should be fine with it. I was just thinking of the hilarity of walking around an airport holding a large sword.

As to the second part of your post, don't we all feel safe under the watchful eyes of airport security? Just looking at most of the people sitting at the security monitors gives me a feeling of knowing that America's finest are watching out for the "bad people". /sarcasm

Definitely. I used to do Iaido (traditional Japanese swordsmanship), and you couldn't get into the class without a real sword of weapon quality. Mine was $1250, imported from a sword-maker in Japan. There were guys in that class that went NUTS with what they brought, tho. One guy had a sword that was $12,000. Thing was when you held it, you could DEFINITELY feel a difference.

No! For the love of God, OP, don't do it! Don't EVER, EVER buy swords in Chinatown!
Sure, they look nice, but they're all for decorative purposes only. Useless for cutting even cardboard. But if you really want to, just bring 20 or 30 dollars with you. I doubt you even need that much, though...you can always haggle it down to much, much less than what is being offered.

On the other hand, real swords cost much, much more. About 300 dollars and up. These are usually made of 1055 carbon steel, while Chinatown swords are made of low-quality stainless steel. The vendors at Chinatown will of course tell you how sharp and hard their swords are, and maybe even give you a demonstration (unlikely). Don't fall for it.

Where did you find yours? It would be nice to have one for when "friends" decide to come over.

"Hey, have you seen my nice cane? BACHAW! DIE!"
This made me chuckle. As well as WANT ONE!!

To the OP: $300? I think that's about how much my katana cost.

It was a gift! :D
