I have a cane, where you push a button, and the bottom comes out and turns into a sword. Buy that. Its fucking awesome.
I agree with you 100%. If u cant buy one of those, though, buy a nice Katana, or a European Rapier, those are my faves. The cane however, tops them ALL.

Gee, play Daggerfall. If you're up against Daedra, steel and silver won't help either. You use magic, Daedric weapons or your bare hands.
Actually, if you have played Oblivion or Morrowind, you would know that silver weapons can kill Daedra. And using your bare hands against a demon is ridiculous at best.
Minor Daedra in Morrowind go down just fine if you hit them with a flame, lightning, poison or shock blade, whatever the material. In Daggerfall, punching and kicking did actual damage from the start, rather than just trying to knock them down so you could start hurting them, and I did take out a Daedroth that way. They were a little less dangerous in Daggerfall than in Morrowind.

In the Anita Blake books, prayer holds them off but won't hurt them, and in Stephen King's Derry, Maine, faith in what you're using works. A steel-aluminium alloy display "katana" with a plastic grip would do fine if you believed in it.

I don't understand why people buy swords. It has no real practical use in today's world.
They're only useless if you don't have a weapon permit. I am legally allowed to carry around my sword.
Where the hell do you live that you can legally carry around a sword? And not only under what circumstances do they grant you this privilege? Do you have to show the permit office that you're on a sacred quest to kill the 6-fingered man? Or do you have some sort of Highlander exemption? I mean I've heard of carrying a sidearm, and I thought that was ridiculous, but an actual sword permit. I think my brain just said "Fuck This!" and left the room!
God bless America! It's a normal carry permit which allows the carrying of WEAPONS and firearms. Swords are classified as weapons. Ta-Da!!
I suppose it would be useless to point out that statistically you are more likely to hurt a loved one or friend with a weapon in the house than a so-called "bad guy."

I dunno man, I'm sure if someone broke into your house and you came at them with a Claymore, underwear would be soiled.

well if shit goes down and yoy don't have a gun
Excuse me?

How often are you in situations where "shit goes down"? If you think you need a weapon to defend yourself you're a pussy, I got attacked by a group of 5 guys on Australia day this year, made an example of one of them and tied up the next until the fight was broken up by onlookers.

sorry it was 5 guys against you, you 'made an example of one' and 'tied up the next'?

I fail too see how you would have beat 5 guys who were trying to start a fight with you, especially if you were unarmed. either you were not alone, they were hideously drunk, you are some kind of ninja or you're exaggerating.
also what kind of onlooker goes
'ah a 5 on 1 fight, well rather than step in right away Ill let the single guy pull some insane moves and tie up one of the attackers.... not sure where he got the rope but anyway...'
Tie up means to incapacitate or prevent from moving in martial arts - He tried to take me down, I sprawled and swept him so I landed on top of him, then I essentially lay on top of him in such a position that he could mount no further effective offence against me. I really didn't think that would be that hard to get, even for someone who knows nothing about anything.
And the other 4 guys just backed off as you lay on their friend. surely if you were pinning him to the floor you could mount no further offense (note how for someone who 'knows nothing about anything' I can at least spell offense correctly) against the other 4 attackers? did they not think to help their friend? or were they so wowed by the incredible move you used on their friend that they did not risk their own necks against a lone man pinning someone?
Firstly, the word "offense" is the American spelling of the British/Australian word "offence", seeing as how I had already mentioned in passing that I was Australian I would think that it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to assume I would be using pure English spelling.

Secondly, no, they didn't stand there, the started stomping on my back and trying to pull me off their mate, but I've never seen a fight last more than 30 seconds without being broken up, so I was pretty sure time was on my side - which in this case, mercifully, it was. A couple of people stepped in because it happened in the busy nightclub district of my city where there are constantly people. I don't know of anyone that is so dehumanised that they wouldn't step in to stop one guy getting stomped on by three others.
meh Id walk on by because im cold

If its just for display, you can get one for £60 (about $90)

If you seriously intend to practice with these, I'd suggest learning it properly from a medieval weapons club. Beyond that, you'll need to buy armour as well as the sword, and make sure that the sword is a proper one which isn't going to break on the first weeks practice. That's likely to cost you a great deal of money, think £500 at the least for armour and weapon, as well as whatever sum of money you need for the lessons.

Dude, why would you buy a sword? It's a metal women repellent.
I must disagree.

Women who are considered metal can often be seriously keen on swords.

if you mean for ornemental purposes you should able to get one for anything from a £100, but a battle ready one could cost thousands.

You should meet some of the ones I know, Though one did scar me with a foil through an 800 newton Plastron.

We've got a quite few swords, all of them real piece of historic militaria. Mostly European, what I loved is that officers back in the day would have a "dress" sword for partys and parades that was blunt and adorned, along with a "working" sword for battle that was sharp and plain.

But there's one really worth mentioning, Dad's 300-400 year old katana blade (the hilt and scabbard are reasonably new, perhaps 200years), its sharp, unadorned unshiny either deadly steel.

Probably killed a dozen or so people in its time, when you hold it you get this somber serious feeling.

Honestly though for about 200 dollars you can a Ka-Bar Marine fighting knife, carbon steel, blackened as to not reflect light, well balanced and full tang. Why I possess one I don't know but its the apocalypse (zombie, raptor, etc) I'll rely on that rather then most modern swords.

My sister has a katana and it's awesome. I think it cost about £200 but I also think that's fairly cheap for a sword, they can be pricey. I would also love some nunchucks.

I'm going to San Fransisco at the end of the month on vacation and my mom said that we have to go to China Town, so I was thinking of buying a sword there... Anyone know how much I should save up to get a decent one?
A decent one? $900 at least.
