Today at Comicon, after a rumor spread like wildfire through twitter, Sean Dahlberg, the community manager for Star Wars: The Old Republic, made the rumor an official announcement.

Space Combat is Confirmed. [http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=173964]

There will be special areas set out for players to fly their personal space ships in, fight enemies, and dodge asteroids as they see fit.

Now there is a worry about this. Will this be a failed experiment, as Bioware has so much on it's plate? Or something hearkening back to the glory days of X-Wing and TIE Fighter?

This announcement made a small, long since hibernating part of my soul leap out of its slumber in joy.

However, I think I reserve the right to be cautiously realistic about this. I do not think the quality of the space combat in an MMO, one not centered around space combat, can meet the expectations of prior space combat games we remember fondly. More than likely, I think it will mimic the space combat found in SWG's JtL. While JtL was a fine product and gave us nostalgic echoes of X-Wing/TIE Fighter, it was more of an acceptible compromise than a dream come true.

Could you elaborate on what JtL is?

OT: The list of interesting things for this game grows steadily in my eyes, but I still worry what the finished product is going to be like.

Jump to Lightspeed.
It was an expansion pack from Star Wars Galaxies that allowed space combat.

Extra excited, I wonder if you'll be able to get bigger ships or have more than one. Upgrades seem logical, but you never know.

From the description of the thing, sounds like it more of a mini-game mechanic attached to traveling between major locations. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing, it just doesn't have much massively multi-player significance.

What's stopping Bioware from making the 'space missions' like space in KOTOR?
I was worried it might be a turret mission, but with how he describes it, I think it's too big for that, and usually Bioware is pretty up and up about listening to what the people like, and giving it to them. And people did not like the turret levels. Sure they added a change of tempo, but not a good one, and they knew it.

Huh?

All you did in KotOR was shoot down some ships a few times, I think it's going to be a little more involved than that.

Just spreading my worries - I think it'd be more interesting too, but I'm reminding everyone not to be expecting Freelancer.

The US edition of PC Gamer are using the space combat and ships announce as their front cover for this month, I think it's safe to say that that wouldn't happen unless it was more in-depth than KotOR's space combat.

And fuck, I haven't seen anyone mention Freelancer in quite a while.

Ah ok - I see your point there. Anybody want to see Mount and Blade melee combat with lightsabres?

Awesome mod would be awesome?
There's actually already mod that does that, but personally I think it just looks plain awkward plus whenever I see a lightsaber, unless it's an rpg, it oughta be one hit kills. Jedi Knight 2 has done it best so far!

Indeed. When the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight series went the way of the dodo, I was crushed. It was my favorite FPS series for a long time.

Hopefully The Old Republic reinvigorates my love of hitting people with lightsabers and the like.

It won't, if your problem is as described above...
I think the problem is that TOR is an MMO, not Star Wars Battlefront III. Anyone agree? Anyone hate me?

Are these going to be actual space combat sim missions? As in you can actually dogfight? Or is it going to be like EVE where the combat is just your standard MMORPG combat only with ships? If there's dogfighting then I'm sold.
