Are you a table top gamer?
What's your opinion on it compared to video games?
What table top games do you play?
Have you found many video games extreamly similare to table top games? (Excluding baldur's gate because it can't be counted because even though it's based off D&D there aren't many similarity except mabye the XP and leveling).

For me i play D&D 3.5 and warhammer. I enjoy table top gaming it has a slower pace to video games but thats nice occasionally. I found that never winter nights came pretty close and the elder scrolls series had a lot of similarity.

Please add more than just these questions if you want.

It definatley helps if the dm isn't your freind. If the dm is a complete stranger than it helps to get the game moving because you tend to give more attention and respect to some one you just know and you won't pay him out for anything bad in the adventure. Our Dm was my freinds dad when got to know him and slowly became freinds with him but we would give him respect because he was an adult.

If your current dm isn't working out very well why not try to take over. All you need is to do is scan through the dm guide you don't have to read the whole thing. I find that i only use the three core books to look up a rule rather than to actually read. Also don't be afraid to yell at your freinds or at least get them organised don't join in on there jokes and stuff no matter how much you want to and be confident when roll playing npcs and when giving descriptions and story telling.

Take over dm yourself if haven't already my freinds and I take it in turns to dm and writing a long campains that go over weeks is really hard it's much easier just to write an adventure that only takes a day or two often when writting big ideas you will get tired of something in for me it's often the setting. I love trying out different settings and enviroments.

I used to play Lotr Warhammer with a few friends...That was good fun. We all loved lotr and painting the models/making our army was half the fun.

We made a castle to siege with towers and objectives etc. So for instance we had the castle at one end (representing minas tirith) and a area of ruined buildings for osgiliath - objective being somethin along the lines of protect faramir between the two.

I had a big ol' evil army - easterlings were coooool

In terms of how it compares to video games, I like them both - just kinda outgrew the warhammer a bit...the pricing didnt help - stupid games workshop

I play D&D, currently 4th edition.

It's different from video gaming in that it allows you to much more use your imagination allthough I hope video games will allow for that more and more in the future. and it's obiviously a social activity that I do with friends

I'd make a horrible DM, and we tried two others. One gave the DMing power to our current DM in the first place, and the other DM we played with in two separate campaigns and he left both of them to go join a different one, so he's pretty much abandoned us.

And we play some mutant love child of the combat system of 4 and pretty much every other element of 3.5.

Yeah game workshop should really lower their prices.

I've been playing 4th edition and it's ok, we're about to start a new campaign this weekend so I'm looking forward to that. I like table top gaming because you create the character, he's not just a list of speech options, you decide what he say, when he says it and how he says it.

I play 40k but stopped for 5 years or so, I never got into it but a friend of mine did and that got me going again, met some guys at uni that play so now its a big part of my life. Prices are terrible (Aus doesnt help) but ordering from the UK equals out to 1\2 price even with shipping.
The guys at the local GW are nice and having a good community really helps with tabletop (the heavy metal playing at the store doesnt help :3 )

I'm currently in a D&D 3.5 campaign at the moment, but between our group we have a large variety of RPG systems to choose from. Examples include Paranoia, Con X, Cyberpunk, Dark Ages: Vampire, Dark Ages: Werewolf, Star Wars, and Mutants & Masterminds. Examples of board games include: A Game of Thrones, Arkham Horror, Doom (yes, there is a board game adaptation), and a decrepit example of Space Crusade - although these only get trotted out if we have a few no-shows for a planned RPG session.

I've been gaming with elements of my current group for over 13 years (hence our collective library) and have been an RPG gamer in other circles since 1990 when a friend got me hooked with a TMNT system. And take that judgemental look off your face...

Although I find it odd to ask "What table top games do you play?" because is like asking "What videogames do you play?" asking for specific titles. But enough nit picking by me.

I play Warhammer 40 000, I play a lot of board games, the occasional PnP RPG and I used to play Magic the Gathering and other TCGs.


I mainly play Table top based games because it's a much more social experience than videogames, this is why I would say that Bauldurs Gate DO count in comparing Tabletop to Video games. Since any D&D computer adaption will feel so much different from the table top by just being videogames.

Another fun thing with the table top is that you need to learn the rules to play, you can't just install the game and learn by doing, which a lot of videogames can. At the same time tabletop games gives room for interpretations of the rules or downright removal of rules you don't like. (Removal of rules suck though because it means you are not playing the game right)

I like both traditional and video games. I've played Warhammer Fantasy for a while (okay, three times, lost all of em, but it was fun)
I recently started a campaign with D&D 4e (I know, I know, DBZ in a Fantasy setting, I recognise the old rules and features)
And some Cardgames like Yu-Gi-Oh! (lost all of them, either I took too long or lost in an instant) and of course: Magic: The Gathering. (played that for three years until everyone went to an internship)

I get grouchy people mumbling about traditional games being for nerds and it's never fun to do because you put cards on a table and that's it. (they've never played it and never want to, like a child doesn't want to try food that is green) But traditional games have something videogames don't: flexibility.

Even with the internet giving us patches and fixes which is faster to do and adding expansions to their storylines, traditional games can have any story you want. If you don't care about story it doesn't matter, it fits in any way you want to play it! There will always be errata, but you can choose to add that or not. You can mix rules, add objects easily by just learning the rules, not by programming and modding. It just doesn't have integrated music and sound, and that's where videogames shine.

What turns people off is the slow pace. You can't have a racing game in a turn based way. But can have a gripping fight in that way. That's why I love both in their best ways.

Just finished a couple of campaigns- Dark Heresy and Serenity.

At the end of Dark Heresy, we blew up a hive. We split the kills. 45,000,000 each, for the two of us that made it to the final session (There is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt, thus they were all heretics). Oh, and half the rest of the party each, because the GM was fed up of them being unreliable.

I used to play 2nd Edition AD&D way back... knew every tiny little rule and detail =) It was great. Recently I've taken up tabletop gaming again, specifically Rogue Trader (40k roleplaying). It's really good since the players have so much freedom (Im the DM, and I allow it). Essentially, the players are a group of nobles who have enormous resources at hand (and at least one spaceship over one kilometer in length) and a charter from the empire to go out there and make money in the name of the Emperor. East india company IN SPACE =)

I play warhammer 40k and am prob gonna start up wahammer fantasy again lol. I played a lot when I was younger (yes, I was once one of the small annoying children with no clue what was really going on) and collected Eldar ^^ which was a challenge for such a noob, so im quite good now that I'm grown up and understand 'tactics' lol.

It's a very different experience from video games, and involves a lot more imagination. My and my friends who play have had a lot more fun in some cases on table top just because of some bizzar incidents! (like tau gun drones deep striking and killing my damned demon prince!!)

I'd defo recommend it to those who haven't played it. But get what you think is cool and not what will do the best for most fun

Only problem is the massive costs...

I love tabletop gaming but I can never manage to get a time for sessions that is good for everyone and a DM that can be arsed writing a story. I love the fact I can out of a blue shoot some civilian next to me and with enough skill can get away with it scott free or any other situation. Using ingenuity to win is much more rewarding, like my tactic of piling the bodies of everyone we killed across the door to create an unpickable lock that takes one hell of a strength test to beat and by the time it is broken our party has the time to prepare ourselves. Only games I can think of that are similar in a way are turn based strategy games. It involves the same positioning of characters to protect casters, hold important points, placing characters in locations that compliment their skills (archers on higher ground etc).

I play D&D 3.5, trying to make a Pathfinder game, D&D 4.0, Dark Heresy, Rogue Trader and would like to start a Deathwatch game.

I used to collect a bit of 40k and Warhammer Fantasy. Never really played it because I'd buy a unit for one army, then the models would get redone for another army and I'd be *drool*. I ended up stopping because the prices have just about doubled for most things in the past few years. I still love the lore though and often go on the website just to see what new models are about.

D&D I've never played but would love to if I could get the chance. I don't know that many people and none who play so that's snookered me.

I'm a Warhammer fantasy and 40k gamer. I have Eldar and Wood Elves, no i'm not gay.

I don't play it as much any more as I am working a lot now, used to play it most at uni when I did it in frees etc. But my models and game board are still in perpetual readiness in my under-eaves room next to my bedroom!
