Ad presence = money = survival.

Unfortunately, the Escapist is not a highly valuable internet property, so it's not like they can pick the ads they show. They have to go with what they're offered. In some occasions, there aren't ANY external ads in non-US locations, just ads for the shows the Escapist hosts (at least there were back when I saw ads), because there was literally nothing offered for the international slot.

Alternatively, just give the Escapist $20. Not only is this far more helpful to them than a whole year's ad revenue from you, they'll also take away the ads for a year (except the hilarious News Room insertions), give you a few features, and offer higher quality videos.

Yeah, just cough up $20, aside from the no adverts, you get HD videos, podcasts, a RSS feed and a custom tile with a larger avatar.

Yeah i agree, i get it escapist needs ads to survive, but some of the taboola ads are just unpleasant to look at. Especially that one of the persons knee with weird stuff apparently growing on it and no i'm not going to click on it to find out what it is because then they would win.

I just read from the news threads now and bypass the main article pages.

And yes some of those images were vomit worthy and if they showed up on the forums I would be hitting the report button and ignoring the poster.

Its as if they want people to adblock the site.

That image still haunts my nightmares.

I stopped noticing them really, they appear on a lot of sites. I assume it the stuff like "large fly removed from cat" that disturbs you?
I would prefer if they weren't there but I guess it's revenue for this site.

You're gonna have to describe these ads to me.

Alongside such delightful articles like '21 Inanimate Objects Miley Cyrus Has Violated' all from this page:

Hence why I always visit the forum version of article pages.

These "Taboola" ads are disgusting and a disgrace, and they're often in clear violation of the Escapist's own content rules.
They didn't always used to be there. They only popped up a few months ago.

A bit like how threads like these are becoming more and more common now...

I swear, this website has 'adsploded' from what it used to be.

Yes, but it makes users of the site more likely to use an adblock to remove such images and deny any potential revenue that would be gained by them visiting.

I used to recommend The Escapist to friends, now I don't in part due to those ads.

Are you talking about those 'here's some articles from other websites' that are at the bottom of article pages? Yeah some of them are a bit creepy but you don't have to scroll down to look at them, it's not like they are in the middle of the page. Just don't go that far down the page and you'll be fine.

... Which is fine for news articles. But not for featured content articles, such as Extra Punctuation.

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/extra-punctuation

Click on any of them, and you'll see the article text is only on the article page, and not duplicated on the comments threads like with news articles.

Why is that? Why don't they just put the full article in the OP of the comments thread? There's plenty of room for it, and that's what they do with news articles, so I have no idea why they don't do it with featured content articles too.

The bot fly ad had me complaining to Kross and the tech team. Those things aren't just innapropriate for the Escapist, they're innapropriate for Earth.

I just stopped viewing them, I've just realized that apart from Zero Punctuation I've stopped using the the escapist videos and articles for a few months now.

Edit: I just realized I looked at the Greatest Mechs list when it came out, I shouldn't have bothered although.

See, they could've just included the picture gallery images inside a spoiler in the OP of the comments thread.
Then we wouldn't have to click through the images one-by-one, getting these horrible "Taboola" ads in our face each time. (They change each time the page is loaded/refreshed.)

But then I guess I'm not looking at this from the perspective of an advertising exec.
As far as they're concerned, they WANT people to click through as many ad-laden pages as possible.

I have no problem with most ads, as I understand they are vital for the survival of the site.
If _some specific_ ads bother me too much, I write a custom stylesheet that will surgically hide them.

Having seen my fair share of shit on the internet, I don't really mind those.

But the market news video that autoplays with sound makes me want to do evil things, especially when I'm listening to music with 10+ tabs of escapist open.

[small]By the way does anyone know what causes the '); to appear instead of ads? I get this about once every 30 or so ads.[/small]

Uff I already get obnoxious ads on the escapist...always have. I've just grown mentally accustomed to filtering it out in some sub part of my brain.

I don't know if I get those, the ads here seem tailored to UK brands and website suggestions... still obnoxious, and the ones from Boots (it's like a part pharmacy part makeup store thing) need to just...die.

I really want to support the websites I frequent but somedays I am severely put off, there's only so much commercialism you can stomach in a day before you just want to curl up in a blanket and shut the entire world out.

And alot of the American 'we swear it's only 30 second ads' before videos, rules seem to get tossed out the windows when approaching foreign ads. I've had ads as long as 5mins unchecked on some videos (not here, elsewhere on the web)!! That's just heinous.
