EVE appeals to those who are bored of mainstream fantasy hack-n-slash deals like WoW.
I played EVE for several months (Gave up to Knuckle down on GCSE's and now AS).
It can be a very fun game, I flet it has a much tighter community then say WoW as you as previosuly stated, hunting/being hunted by other players and corps.
Take the main example I have from my experiance.
I joined EVE, signed up to a corp, we then got a contract with one of alliances (Groups of Player corps) to do some mining in 0 sec (the lawless side of space). Atfer a few weeks we got ganked by a rival corp of our employer. Quite a bit of kit was lost in the process. We were told not to worry as our employer would sort it out. Couple of months past, and we did feel kinda sore about it.
Then one day as we log we have a representative of our employer warp in, tell us to grab our best cargo ships and head to a certain system. Within half an hour we were headed to the rival corps space with about 2 dozen combat ships and a freighter.
What it turned out was that my corp had been used as a honey trap to help our employers spy infiltrate their corp to the point were he had hanger access. We made off with every single item in the hanger. Modules, loot, minerals, BPOs. All of it was packaged under escrow to us to be delivered to a station in our space. Our corp came back a second time to nab the corp hanger ships.
Then on the way back we passed the rival corp.
This spooked us a little but they didn't bat an eyelid.
Our CEO was later told the figure for the raid was around a billion isk, and we got our compensation.
Once the contract expired we stayed in that space, selling minerals to them and performing trade runs between their stations, which benefitted both of us.
There was a problem, the region we were in began to become unstable, lots of fights breaking out. Skrimishes by rival corps. When we learned that attacks were being planned to purge the region within the week, and with the knowledge we were in no shape to fight, we decided to bug out and run for empire space. We packed up everything the corp owned and began shipping it to empire space. This ALMOST went flawlessly, but we got jumped on the last run by a corp, and ended up having to run further from empire, into enemy territory, and back out.
We settled down to running hi level missions to gain some capital, then i quit so as to dedicate more time to study.
So yes it can be a fun game but two things are required:
- Patience
- and joining a player corp.
It is a different kettle of fish to WoW, for starters it is difficult, there are consequences for the tiniest mistake (as the rival corp found out, not locking their blueprints in the hanger) and it defys all meausres of scale. in my six months playing I visited mabye 100-200 of the 5000+ systems. From what I've heard theres soon to be more in the new free expansion pack.
I hope you either enjoy or are indifferent about it. Hate should be reserved for idiots.
And on the subject of game bashing, I view ZP not as the charismatic stallion of the interwebs he once was, but as the crazy guy who sits on the bus claiming he invented tuppaware. Yes its funny to watch but you know deep down he needs help as he is suffering Sonic the hedgehog syndrome, (See ZP: Sonic unleashed and you should get the idea).
