I was thinking about giving this game a try again, because after a year maybe they changed somethings and maybe made it better. Well I go to the site to renew my subscription, and find out that it ended. Just like that. No "The stories over, but you can still play" stuff. Servers shut down, and thats it.

Now this is the first MMO I have heard of doing this. Is this common procedure among MMO's?

It isn't the first MMO to shut down. Asheron's Call 2 was shut down. There's probably some others as well. If the game isn't popular enough to sustain a profit, it makes sense for the servers to close.

ya they made it free for the last month or two and then had a big battle for the last 5-6hours of game time, then some big story shift happened and everything was destroyed in a fiery hellstorm of nuclear explosions or something like that.

I know. Almost made me want to play it before I remembered that I dislike MMOs.

I dissagree, If a MMO isn't popular enought to sustain a profit you make it free, let a bunch of people join, and bring out stuff like powerful items for real money and like that.

Happens somewhat often. If a game can't pay it's own bills it becomes a money sink. Sad, but just how it goes.

I never got to play it. They posted an article here on the escapist about the massive armageddon event they did at the end. That was the only thing about the game that interested me.

It depends if its economically viable that root on that particular game.

To be honest, if they just copy WoW and cover it in a sci-fi theme, it was obviously not going to work.

If you want to steal players from WoW, you need to offer more. If you don't want to steal WoW players, don't copy WoW as everyone interested in WoW style gameplay is already on their and won't be bothered with your new MMO to work through another grind to the top.

Didn't Hellgate: London die, too?
I hope so, that game was awful.
Hey, that game looked pretty good...And did it have any sort of single player?
Yeah it looked good, but it was just. so. dull!

It did have single player, it's what I spent most of my time on thanks to the screwed up registration-majig.

God, if you want it you can have my copy for free.

Parts didn't work as well together as they did on paper, eh?

It wasn't a horrible MMO, it just didn't really become popular.
It wasn't a horrible game, it was just a Richard Garriott game and most people got sick of Garriott's ego trips around Ultima VII.
