Well if they're just going to shut it down then why would I start playing even if it's free

Perhaps because the servers are being shut down just before saddle sores would become an issue?

I thought about trying it, but my laptop is about one hardware generation below the minimum system requirements.

I don't know why everyone is so negative about this, it's a completely and totally free commercial MMO. Even if it's only for a couple months, newcomers will get to see if they like it or not, because you really don't need two months to tell if you like a game or not. I think it's a great move on NCSoft's part, still waiting to see what happens in February.
