I haven't played a game like the original Ghost Recon for a long time, the sort where you plan out your moves before the map starts and then execute it, a la Rainbow 6.

Now can someone recommend one of the more recent ones that have the most of this style of if a team mate gets shot, they're dead/wounded for the rest of the game, where you get a map and have to carefully plan your attacks and what not.

I know most of them turned into a regen-health run and gun type affair, but I'll just go pick up something that is as close to those original ones as possible until the one using Kickstarter is released.

I have a craving for this type of game, but I've stopped looking at them too closely since they changed so much, so recommendations please!

Hmmmnnn... I'll admit I'm not especially well versed in this sub-genre, but I've heard that Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising is pretty hardcore in that regard. It's also not very good, apparently -_-

Other than that, I'd recommend Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory and Hitman: Blood Money as being highly satisfying games in terms of planning your course of action and learning through trial and error until you can effortlessly pull off the perfect mission. However these are more stealth games and naturally don't contain any of the 'squad tactics' that you're looking for.

To be honest something like that would satisfy seeing as I know there isn't much about, but I've already completed both of those games numerous times.

What systems do you have?

If you have a PC, the SWAT series is exceptional. It's a bit dated by now because of it's age graphics-wise but for tactical shooting, I don't think I've played anything better.

A few bullets will take you down (as well as your buddies). If you only get hit once, that body part becomes a liability (hit in the arm, your aim shakes; hit in the leg, you can't run). The bad guys and hostages are randomly spawned, which is a great way to make the maps different each time (surprised so few games do this).

Lastly, like the real SWAT team, your job isn't to kill everyone. You are required and graded on doing everything possible before resorting to lethal force. The bad guys have to be aiming a weapon at you, a squad mate, or a hostage or else you get docked points for killing them. You can take out all the bad guys and rescue everyone and still fail a mission because you decided to Rambo the place up...

SWAT 4, dude. It's pretty much the embodiment of a hyperrealistic game. You get to order your squad around and do awesome manuevers like ordering your squad to stack up at different entrances to a room before ordering them both to breach, catching enemies by surprise and getting them all to drop their weapons in surrender. Plus, the atmosphere and soundtrack is brilliantly done and provides an incredibly tense experience each time, which is magnified by the randomized spawn points for enemies and hostages. Watch Spoony's Let's Play Swat 4 for a good idea of how the game goes.

Tazering the old ***** in this level is scientifically proven to never cease to amuse.

FROZEN SYNAPSE

If you want that sort of turn-based tactical experience this is *the* game you're looking for.

If you want something more fps-ish then the already recommended SWAT 4 is ideal. Not only is SWAT4 a great tactical game, but it's just a great all round game as well. The original Ghost Recon might be worth looking into as well!

Between There and There.
Country
The Wide, Brown One.
SWAT 4 and, if you're feeling up to some straight out military simulation, ArmA II.

Both are games where run-n-gun playstyle will get you shitstomped in short order.

This is a stretch assuming you've got the rig to run it, but I'll recommend ArmA 2, or assuming you have an NSA supercomputer, ArmA 3 when it drops.

Another choice might be the Operation Flashpoint series excluding Red River.

Others have mentioned SWAT 4.

For an unusual choice here, I'll kinda say America's Army 3.

OP for dragon rising is just about as realistic and tactical as it gets
The moment I looked at the map in DR and saw all the enemies positions highlighted I died a little inside.
Apparently you can turn that off with difficulty settings.
